He had lost all of his cavalry (they didn't die or anything--they sorta rode off east) and decided to march on Gettysburg without any military reconnaissance, on the advice of Henry Harrison. Henry had no military training, and said the entire Union army was at Gettysburg, but hell, you can take 'em. Lee arrived in Gettysburg, found himself vastly outnumbered and outgunned, and decided to send the entire army straight in to take a hill, a military tactic indistinguishable from pouring out a bucket on a bonfire and then giving up. With no intel, no plan, and no control over the flanks of his army, Lee bet everything, and lost loving hard.

The way Ken Burns documentary and history courses I took made it sound the Union just went through terrible general after terrible general before getting to Grant who was simply willing to actually pursue and eliminate Lee's army. It sounds like had they not just kind of sat there and let him retreat at a few key battles (specifically Antietam) they could have ended the war within a year which is how long they had really expected it to last. I remember hearing what Lee was infamous for is having almost no apparent moral hangup over sending men into battle to die for strategically insignificant gains but gains nonetheless. I think Lee was a competent general but I do wonder how things would turn out in some alternate history where he gets Grant first thing instead of McClellan who's claim to infamy was always fighting like he was vastly outnumbered when in fact his armies vastly outnumbered the opposing army. The ironic thing is that in the general consciousness Paterno and Sandusky merged together, so your average joe on the street probably things that JoePa molested the kids himself-- thus negating the reputation he desperately tried to preserve in life by covering up the sexual assault of others. College sports is the Scientology of American Capitalism. 99.x% of the ~student athletes~ are chewed up and spat out with a substandard 'certificate' claiming they completed a questionably-worthwhile social rite of passage for the enjoyment of people who are at a higher 'operating level' than them. And the less than 1% who 'make it' won't ever shut up about the 'opportunity' their alma mater afforded them, ensuring that an entire ethnically-unbalanced group of mostly young men continue to work toward trying to get that camel through the eye of the proverbial needle.
