The book/movie of this administration ends with Trump in the White House, utterly alone, sitting at the Resolute Desk tweeting.

I mean, sure, it's great that Trump will soon live in an empty white house, but, also, who? Like, how is this weakening him? Symbolism is powerful. Remember that Trump doesn't do a lot in the first place. So being seen as abandoning him in a show of disgust and solidarity is almost as powerful as actually being a real council that is advising him and abandoning him anyway. A good portion of Americans think these councils do things after all instead of just being symbolic. Also, and this is important, while these councils don't do anything, the individuals who make up these councils consult and are consulted by the government. So it's not just for show.

When poo poo goes south people who were powerful prior to that collapse will still be powerful, and accelerationism just means they're even more powerful. Plus a glorious socialist revolution post-collapse is a promise for a better future going up against Up And Coming Feudal Lord's promise of bread and safety. Easy to figure out where people are most likely to fall en masse. I can't think of a situation in history where the total collapse of a government led to things getting better instead of just worse. Plus if you've got a revolution ready to bring war to the capitalist system, why don't you just do that instead of loving up a ton of people's lives first? I'd call them an idiot both times, as someone who loves Bernie too. But, I guess the Trump presidency has turned out, in some ways, less bad than I would have predicted last November. He's just not a leader and one of the most incompetent people to hold office, and little of the rightwing agenda is being accomplished. We might actually have a better chance at flipping a bunch of nationwide offices that we would not have under Clinton, as well as possibly moving the DNC left (yea right).

The movement to remove confederate monuments has been going on since before Trump's presidency. As has the conservative meme of running over protestors. Also hard to say if the only way to convince people poo poo's bad is a nazi running over innocent people.

A lot of this stuff is just plain mundane stuff that concerns dry material in the day to day operations of the United States federal government. In a way it's nice to have these things, which are usually abstracted from a typical person, come to light because it at least partially dispels the garbage narrative that we're some 'small town Main Street' type joint with the old-timey lunch counter and general store. We're a country of 320 some odd million people that spans 2.6 million square miles of land, is industrially advanced and contains like 4 thousand some-odd distinct municipalities and equivalent stitched into a federal republic with 50 distinct State entities. That takes a lot of heavy loving lifting by a huge number of people and constructs to support.

Wikipedia posted:Pencil fighting typically involves two players attempting to break one-another's pencils.[1] Players take turns in which one player holds their pencil horizontally with both hands while the other player flicks their pencil at it in attempts to break it.[1] The first player to break the other's pencil is the winner.[2] Foul plays have been suggested, such as intentionally hitting a player on the fingers, dropping the pencil, and missing the pencil when striking.[2] When a foul has occurred, the offender may be required to allow a free extra strike against their pencil.[2] Edit: Beaten badly Prester Jane fucked around with this message at 02:26 on Aug 19, 2017 |

Uglycat posted:but you definitely would /not/ entertain, for example, the thought 'holy poo poo, they called it and I called them an idiot but maybe they were /right/!'? Broken clocks and all that. The idea that things getting horrendously worse leading to a better future is ill-supported historically, as is the idea that it's the only way to get people to agitate for their rights. For an accelerationist to actually call it, they need to prove their claim that poo poo getting worse is both necessary and sufficient, as well as their claim that it would then lead to things getting better instead of worse as is normal. And also that this would all be better than just actively working to improve the world and tear down lovely systems, despite how it will lead to innocent people suffering and dying. Like that last bit can't be ignored here, the accelerationist argument is that it's okay to force a whole bunch of other people to suffer and die because you're gambling it'll lead to a better result in the end. edit: Also to be extra clear, the point of that post is just because a thing happened doesn't mean it couldn't happen any other way. Especially not in this instance, when things have been heading towards this moment anyhow. Accelerationism is by its own admission a worsening of people's lives, so if it's not the only way then there's not really a good reason to go down that route.
