this thread really really should read twilight of the elites

it's insanely spot on and it predicts like 80% of what would happen five years later

america is beyond hosed and the rot has metastasized

meritocracy is a lie, it's the same as it always has been, rule of the many by the few

the elites just keep on swapping out how exactly "the few" are chosen, it doesn't matter what the political structure is, communist, capitalist, neoliberal, local mayordoms, state governorships, the same thing keeps happening over and over and over

I played the ASOIAF RPG before I ever read a ASOIAF book or watched GOT and I can confirm that it is not very good

I played a commoner (grizzled veteran master-at-arms) because at the time I didn't understand how obsessed with the nobility the franchise is

You're probably looking for a well-designed point system for that, maybe Iron Kingdoms or Fragged Empire. Something with miniatures and positioning and a ruleset that treats PCs and NPCs the same. You can't really role-play very well solo though, that I've ever heard of anyway.

i really want a system designed for pbp/pbem or some other way of connecting distributed players who have trouble organizing a stable meeting time

at this point a resolution system requiring me to take pictures of birds w my phone and send them on a group text would more easily accommodate a game for me than the usual weird dice would

UA was one of the most interesting modern settings I'd seen in a long time when I first picked it up about ten, fifteen years ago. Pity the system's such complete garbage.

positioning is ok in small doses but most systems take it too far. i'd like something like a board game crossed with a choose-your-own-adventure book, but stripped down almost to the basics so it doesnt require more than 5 minutes of prep and you'd have like ten possible adventures broken up into three arcs, which you combine randomly. like you'd start in the town/city/farm, do a random starter quest in tavern/castle/etc, it leads into rescuing slaves from the mine overrun with bandits/orcs/witches/vampires, then that segues into assaulting their boss's fortress/witch house/hell portal/etc. between areas you'd have a random encounter, or it might be a traveling merchant so you can stock up on potions or buy a rare +3 mace or whatever

fun to imagine this stuff while high anyway, probably more of a pita to design it

Exploration is ill-advised.
Problem with tabletop RPGs is that they're actually hard to do well, and all the people who can do them well make way more money making video games.

my old D&D group never plays anymore because two of us moved away and we put together a Roll20 campaign that we're taking turns running one-offs in but it's still really hard to get everyone free on the same afternoon

My old D&D/Deadlands/whatever group still meets up, albeit not as often as we did back in our 20s, but I'm like seven hours away now and it sucks. Haven't done any regular gaming since like 2009, the odd one-shots not withstanding.

its such an obv niche for elfgames, esp because so much of the tg industry orbits around internet forums that have both grognard conversation and pbp poo poo

like half the conversation around these things happens right next to play by post games and no one has come up w a system specifically for that????? why are they all so dumb????????

my group's been doing tuesday nights for 2-3 hours via google hangouts for video + roll20 for playing and it's actually working way better than anyone expected. we just either play someone's char or have them sit out if they're on vacation (obv if the dm's out of town we just don't play)

one time we had huge technical issues and just did a conference call which worked surprisingly well since we weren't doing super focused combat that night
