Un-awesome AI car poo poo is that I'm finally selling my Abarth cabrio this weekend after 3 fun years. Just can't justify it anymore now that I only drive it one day per week and MAYBE take it to the store on the weekend.

I love it so much. Tiny insane little cars are the best.

I've driven a few Fiesta STs and I tell all my fiends who love on old ITRs and CRXs and stuff to try one out. They are so loving fun and reasonably priced. My brother has a tune and an intercooler on his and it will give my wrx a run for its money.

Tell him about the blower!

I've been watching Speed Racer since I was in 3rd grade (1979), but I need to watch the original Mach Go Go Go. I have Wangan Midnight, but haven't watched it yet, I'd like to see Redline, and Ex-Driver is difficult to find in a decent quality. There may not be a decent quality since LOL videotape. Initial D - well, yeah, that was the first "car" anime I found after Speed Racer. At the risk of sounding like a hipster, I ran across it just before it became *really* popular. I still have that fansub. The rest of those are new to me - thanks!
I'd also add "Riding Bean" in there, just because of Bean's car, and a bunch of other very recognizable real cars.

If I have to start commuting more than I am now, one of those is on my list. I also just discovered the Kia Forte5 with the turbo 1.6, which I would also consider. We've had good luck with my wife's Kia Spectra5. Of course, I told her that they put the turbo motor in the Soul (which she wanted anyway) and now she wants one of those. Soul only has the DSG or whatever Kia calls it, but that's OK, as her arthritis is starting to make it difficult to drive stick.

If the shifter position wasn't so awkward for me, I might have ended up with one of those instead of the Focus ST. As a daily commuter car, I think I'm better off with the Focus, but the Fiesta is certainly more 'fun' feeling.

honestly the torque steer when you dropped it in the focus made me not go with it. i mean its a great car, it just required attention and :effort:

A friend let me autocross her Fiesta ST, and I let her drive my Focus. They are quite a bit of a different experience to drive for sure. Both of us beat the Fiesta's time in the Focus, so even though it doesn't "feel" as fast, in that one particular instance, it was actually slower. The Fiesta had 'real' autocross tires (street) on it and the Focus had the factory Goodyears too.

Edit: I don't even notice the torque steer anymore. Just something I deal with automatically now I guess.

Thanks all :)

This was a local news article on a one-owner 1971 Chevelle SS. He has had the car for 46 years and bought it for himself after graduating college. Because of his age at the time of purchase he opted for the 350 engine because the 454 was too expensive to insure. He checked every other option.

quote:

He paid the rest of the $4,507.37 when the car arrived; that’s about $27,000 in today’s dollars, and the car is worth much more than that...He drove the car every day for 18 years, even when a guy dropped off a copy of Hemmings Motor News so he could see what it was worth and encouraged him to garage it. Over the years, he’s kept it up, recovering the front bucket seats, getting an engine rebuild, freshening up the paint and top, and adding dual exhaust in the 1970s. He said he’s never abused it because he’s the one who works on it....He has no interest in selling the Chevelle, and this isn't the only item he's kept for a long time. He also bought a 1976 Ford pickup when it was a year old. He still has it. He also restored the Honda 250 he bought when he was 17. And he still has the wife who helped him pick out the Chevelle’s colors in April 1971.

And the thing that makes this particularly awesome AI:

quote:

JCPenney Auto sold him a lifetime warranty on a battery back in the day. They have paid for that dearly in replacements, assuming no one would keep a car more than 46 years.
you can see in the comments the owner has noted that JC Penney still honors the battery warranty by sending him to Firestone service centers :laffo:

To be honest, I far prefer Bean's character in the Gunsmith Cats manga, it's a pity he didn't turn up in the anime - though again, the GSC anime is an opportunity for Sonoda to shove in a few of his choice cars, but the manga is just chock full of choice metal. You're Under Arrest is another one that has unecessarily cool/rare cars sprinkled on (there's a bloody Mini ERA Turbo in it, for God's sake).

I'll always say go with what feels more fun, and bollocks to the numbers (I'm in the James May "gently caress Yo 'Ring Time" camp). A 180-200bhp Fiesta ST will get you point to point about as fast as you need on the kind of roads that make a hot hatch enjoyable, anyway.

Fun is great, but I'm old enough that it was more important to me to be comfortable in the car for hours at a time while stuck in traffic, and the Focus won in that category handily. Which one was faster didn't factor into my decision on which one to buy. It's also nice to have a bit more room inside.

Yep. We're pretty good with grandfathering historical stuff, mainly. There are some gotchas with vehicle-related regulations, but broadly speaking, it's all pretty sensible. I would far, far rather work within our rules than the complete bollocks I see from some European countries, US states, or Australia. It's by no means perfect here, but it can be (and is) much worse elsewhere.

Some things have gone badly here, though, like the stripping of rights of way access for vehicles under New Labour, but overall we do not bad considering we have similar issues with petty NIMBY types and the Mothers Against Everything lobby groups as found everywhere.

I went to a car show in Virginia that included a Stanley Steamer the owner had driven to the show. He said he periodically had to pull into a neighborhood, knock on a random door, and say "hey can I use your hose to fill up my car?" The sound the steam engine made was so drat cool.
