As an update to the LG G6 debacle. Go to the store on my lunch break, and ask for a replacement. They bring out the replacement (manufacture date March 29 2017), and as I turn it on there is an obvious temp/color difference between the overheating brick and the brand new device. Then it hits both myself and the store clerk: a very dark brown coloration at the bottom left of the display.

LG is so bad that three out of three devices I've seen so far have some sort of manufacturing defect. Returned. got my money back. Never again. What can or should I buy for ~$500?

Don't spend $500 on a 6p when that's about what a Pixel will cost (refurbs were on sale for as low as...$379 I think, a week or two ago?). I also just wouldn't spend that kind of money on an Axon or OnePlus if a Pixel is a similar price in your region. Saving $100-200 to buy a OP5 instead of a Pixel was always a pretty iffy plan, but saving $0 or paying more for the OP5 is just dumb.

Split-screen seems to be supported by everything. I got the impression it's a "trivial" case of just making your application resolution-scalable.

I imagine PIP is a bit more...nuanced, if it's an app-specific thing.

Split screen is not app specific. It's a separate view that can be filled with any app. However, if an app doesn't resize to odd aspect ratios well, things won't look very pretty.

As I understand it, PIP on Android is technically system level and implemented as a type of overlay like those color tint reading apps. There's no global control of it though and its just "on". You can disable them on a per app basis in Settings>Apps>[app]>Advanced.

They can, but that's really uncommon. App developers are both lazy enough that they won't want to make handling for split-screen edge cases, and also lazy enough that they won't want to disable split screen. Source: I am an app developer.

It's an official Android implementation of something that's been done on a few apps for a while now (see the Twitch app). Unfortunately it seem so be only half as good and kills your phone if it's running when your screen is off and you try to wake your phone.

Yeah there's an 'I support multi-window' flag apps can set and it defaults to on. Taffer's saying apps don't have to roll their own magic window thing, android just sticks them in a smaller box and if they don't make the effort to look good in it, too bad!

I saw you actually returned it but going back a few pages and for anyone who might encounter this again and for people who likes and can tinker with things to get things done:

You can try using metal files to work the edge down to desired depth.

Something like this would work.
https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/files/8-inch-half-round-file-96629.html

Then carefully sand it with various grit sandpaper, start with 300 then ends with 1200 grit and possibly finishing it up wet sanding it.

https://www.harborfreight.com/9-in-x-11-in-wetdry-sanding-sheets-assortment-10-pc-60297.html

For wet sanding, be careful to prep it properly so you don't get it wet. You can either take it apart first or tape it up properly.

Total cost, less than 10 bucks :awesomelon:

It will also give you a unique look with the bare metal part too, just cover it with industrial strength sharpie if you want to make it darker. You can also vary the layers of sharpie to get different hue.

Ok I know I was just advocating for unlocking your bootloader/rooting your phone but even I wouldn't suggest someone file their - in warranty - brand new phone.

hello
My Nexus 6P has been turning itself off at 30-40% battery over the last couple of months (probably only 3 or 4 times so far). Quick googling tells me it's a common issue and something about a class action lawsuit (??).

I assume it's only going to get worse, it's still in the 2 year warranty period by a couple of months at the moment, but the instances I can find online of people dealing with the issue through my carrier (Optus in Australia) aren't promising.

What's my best shot at not having a phone that becomes unusable just outside of warranty? Just try to get Optus to do something? Any better to try Huawei directly? Can I sue Google?

Your phone is on borrowed time. Huawei is a 1 year replacement, Google only covers phones they sold, and I believe it's for the bootloop of death. Get Optus to replace it.

Tell Optus you have the bootloop of death because what you have now is a warning sign of it happening. It's how mine started and how people reported theirs starting on a ton of forums.

Edit:. Does it sometimes crash while loading maps? That's what mine kept doing as well.

Not an android guy. Bought a Redmi Note 4X for $114 to cover me until new iPhone's out, holy poo poo is this thing good value for money. Blown away honestly.

Equally mind-blowing is the complete lack of palm rejection. Like it's not that it's poorly implemented, there literally isn't any.
I get proper spot-on handling requires the manufacturer tuning the algorithm specifically by size and model, but is there really not even something basic shipped with the OS itself, to filter out obvious noise? Or has Xiaomi turned it off?

How do I fix this bullshit? I'm willing to get Dr. Jan Itor on the case if that's what it takes (and getting rid of the MIUI crap seems like a nice enough bonus), but especially for such a temp phone/platform I'd rather avoid the hassle of learning how to back up, root, flash and whatnot...

Even just dumbly discarding input from the first few pixels on either side ought to improve the situation a thousandfold. How would one go about that?

It doesn't, and they won't, but yeah I'd pay $300 for the 4GB G5+. It's not a flagship but it's a very good phone, not just "a very good phone for the price".
