A friend from college stopped by his in-laws the other day to see how their sewer replacement project was going. He found this in the front yard: The hole eventually reached a depth of about 12 feet. The guy working in the trench was lowered into/lifted out of the hole in the bucket of the backhoe. Friend (who works for a company that makes safety equipment, including shoring systems) asked the guys if they were going to support the walls of the trench in any way. Their response? "Naw, that's good stable clay. Doesn't need shoring."

There is a book called "the power of habit" which in one part talks about a transformation of safety culture at Alcoa. In one segment there are executives stopping in the middle of their commute to lecture rando construction workers on the proper use of shoring. Sadly the whole book isn't like that.

On a tiny little car ferry in Holland, the driver of a car figured she'd fit behind a truck because the truck would move further forward. Well it didn't because there was another car in front. The ferry driver didn't notice her so this happened.

I have pressing questions about this picture, namely "how". They look like they're just chilling there like "yeah no biggie, just waiting for our friend with a boat to come and push from the other side". Also good thing the engine's in the front.
