After going through a few "final" interviews my managers let me know I got the promotion I was aiming for! School started too and it's kicking my rear end already but it's a good kind of rear end kicking. Java and Discrete Math are super interesting. TT: you're the only person I know on here used to do what I do, I made genius! Super excited about that and driving down to Austin for my companies Pride parade event. After driving from Dallas to Seattle and back again, 3 hour road trips seem like a cakewalk.

Not the only place that I posted this, but might as well lay out my thoughts a little more. So I've come to a point in my projects where it makes sense to learn a good finite element analysis software package. I was poking through the ANSYS page (which I've touched before but a long time ago) and came across this: http://www.ansys.com/products/academic/online-masters-degree Which, it's ANSYS (which is a known industry-standardish software company) setting it up so there's some legitimacy, AFAICT the university they're working with is legitimate and accredited, and if it's at all looked at as legitimate it would be a nice thing to have on the resume... like, if there's a difference between that and "self taught but look I can demonstrate I've used it for personal projects, really, believe me!" it might maybe be worth it, possibly. Yeah yeah I know get a real degree... I'm not keen on commuting for a "real" Masters degree, and as far as I can remember my undergrad GPA was kinda poo poo (I mean I was a bad student with mental health issues but I got my piece of paper) so as far as I can tell it would be a pain in the rear end to get my rear end into a Masters program. I mean I'm going to self-teach myself this poo poo anyway, I just had the thought that maybe with a bit of extra work it could (maybe?) help careerwise too. Load of BS?

It was archaic as poo poo back then (2008-2011) and I don't know if much has changed since they were hell bent on keeping that 80s/90s software interface (old rear end slide rule engineers use this program and don't like change). They had another software (Workbench) which was newer but not sure if it was as powerful in what you could do. It was like the dumbed down GUI version with less options as far as I can tell but much easier to model things. Modeling things in Ansys sucks dick though, it's not intuitive or friendly in that regard. Most everything was made in UG and imported in. FEA sounds cool in theory but you don't want to work in that field (or at least I didn't). Self teach yourself and you can still list it on a resume without some weird niche degree. It's used in Aerospace but I'm not sure what other industries really use it. Auto uses CATIA I believe. Suburban Dad fucked around with this message at 20:38 on Aug 25, 2017 |

Apparently since then it's all moved to Workbench, at least from poking around on the outside. I suppose that's a good point though, in terms of "well and then what?" - it's kind of expensive to get a certificate for something people aren't necessarily looking for. Weird that CATIA and Solidworks are both still things given they're owned by the same people now.

I built a Porsche GT3 RS Has a working dual clutch transmission, LSD & steering rack The parts after separating them out for stage 1... of 4. My workspace size planning was... optimistic. It's 24"x9"x6" tall and larger than I expected. 1/8th scale, 2704 pieces. even has a Lego Porsche bag to go in the frunk.

Well, some .40 S&W shells were blocking the drain on the windshield cowl around my wiper motor, causing it to flood during last night's rain, causing failed wipers (because the control module is INSIDE the motor housing). Cleared out the...blockage..., resoldered the joints on the motor control board, and schmeared everything up with half a cup of dielectric grease. Works again, for now.
