Supposedly the blocking units hardly ever shot anyone anyway, they usually just turned people around and sent them back to the fight, or formed a useful regrouping point for retreating soldiers. It's funny just how much of the commonly accepted knowledge of the eastern front comes directly from Nazi propaganda.
