There's a point to be made here that, even as relatively simple as Avatar is, she's written as a participatory partner in the conflict and not a trophy or a damsel. She takes her share of kills and in the end is the one to ride to the rescue to shoot Quaritch off Jake's avatar's back.

How is it not? Cameron dismisses Wonder Woman as an objectified icon (where he entirely misses the point of the character) and undermines the film's success because of that, saying all its praise is misguided. Him saying the film is a step backward is what's misguided considering the tweet I embedded neatly sums up how the movie not only transcends typical reactions from "male Hollywood" as he says, but its success and inspiration crosses into demographics that many female-led films, his included, have never reached, and it does so with great cultural effect at that.

It's worth stating that no one is upset at badass warrior women with troubled pasts or trauma. The Bride is a fine character, as are Sarah Connor and Furiosa.

The objection is entirely the notion that this archetype is somehow the best or only permissible archetype, and that Wonder Woman is somehow a worse character for being innocent.

TychoCelchuuu

This space for Rent.
To give Cameron a little more credit, his point isn't that it's better to have women who are warriors with troubled pasts rather than women who are warriors and also basically perfect. His point is that men get to be complex, troubled heroes with interesting character flaws, men don't always have to be gorgeous objectified sex objects when they're action heroes, etc., and it would be better if women were like that too (which is what Connor and Ripley are like). He's wrong because there are plenty of cheesecake men like Wonder Woman, so there's nothing wrong with having women like Wonder Women, but he's not as bad as someone who thinks that for a woman to be an action hero she's gotta be hosed up somehow, which is definitely a thing some people think.

I know you're not necessarily comparing Wonder Woman 2017 to Ghostbusters 2016, but come on. The message of Wonder Woman, both the film and the character, are significantly genuinely more inspiring than whatever the hell Ghostbusters remake was trying to achieve.

Ghostbusters 2016 is a terrible film with zero message; it's an advertisement parading around as a film using a nostalgic property and brand recognition to trick you into thinking it's an actual movie. Instead you're just met with a boring story and characters that are flat and nonsensical, with no true emotional arcs among them to latch on to. What sucks the most is 3/4 of the core cast are supposed to be scientists, but the film does a really poor job presenting this because the characters are so poorly written. It's a soulless movie, through and through.

Wonder Woman 2017 in comparison has a lot of heart and the film's/character's core message of "love conquers all" is about as wholesome as you can get. With all the dreary real world poo poo going on right now, a movie like Wonder Woman is a great thing to have around imo.

That is like the best part of Dark of the Moon. Megatron says to Prime, "what would you be without me" and then he says " time to find out" and he axe murders him! Then he shoots his mentor in the face with a space robot shotgun for betraying all of his kind and trying to enslave the humans.

I also think his mentor begged for his life too, it was sweet.

Not sure what agenda you're pushing here, but do you really feel Diana being beautiful diminishes the core value of the character or the film in any way? Quoting Patty again, because it's worth repeating:

"If women have to always be hard, tough, and troubled to be strong, and we aren't free to be multidimensional or celebrate an icon of women everywhere because she is attractive and loving, then we haven't come very far have we. I believe women can and should be everything just like male lead characters should be. There is no right and wrong kind of powerful woman."
