It's a federal felony punishable by up to five years, which is pretty severe. My guess would be that they don't want to prove mens rea for aggravated assault or attempted homicide, or open the door to a self defense claim.

I don't think any of those are specific crimes in South Carolina.

Isn't it standard practice to charge people with all of the above and get them on what you can? At least when you're not empathizing with the neo-nazi, I guess.

Looked it up and you're right the only other law South Carolina has that could be applied is about pointing guns at other people, which is a felony that carries five years.

I also learned that making Teflon coated ammo is illegal which led me to look at what Teflon coated ammo is for an hour.

restricting the supreme court to a legislative OCR machine erodes their constitutional role in checking the power of the legislature and executive.
Perhaps, but I think we've gone too far in the opposite direction. The state of perpetual deadlock in the legislature has effectively ceded too much power to the executive and the judiciary. The fact that huge areas of law can turn on whether the Supreme Court is 5-4 conservative or 5-4 liberal tells me that they aren't functioning as a check so much as deciding what the law is.

ICE released 50 previously detained asylum seekers to a bus station after providing arrangements and tickets for travel. Regional service was later shut down or delayed due to the storm. Once notified of the issue, ICE worked with San Antonio who had a relief agency make arrangements for the people to have places to stay the night while they waited. Most families have already left the area with service being restored. BUZZFEED gotta BUZZFEED.

IIRC most major Airports like Houston have a mobile ground radar and mobile/emergency ATC.

That or Houston Space Center probably has their own ATC.

It would make sense that, after you get to the point where you throw your hands up and admit that evacuations will no longer ever be feasible, you go balls to the wall in funding flood protection measures and emergency response so people can survive in place. I don't think much of that happened.

Before my time, but AWACS was close-controlling helicopters in the immediate Katrina aftermath using printed city maps and correlating to radar data. Their success meant we got NORAD-diverted from normal training to watch hurricanes make landfall for the next couple of years, even when they were weak and not expected to do much. I watched Gustav, which was interesting only because the ASO tweaked the long-range radar to show moisture...we actually saw the arms and rotation of the storm, which I didn't think was possible.

Houston has a pretty robust flood control system in place, but there's only so much you can do against 3 feet of rain.
