So the butler likes RPGs and stuff too. Does he GM for you, like as part of his butler duties? Did you hire that weird wanabee professional GM with the masks as a butler? Or did you just happen to get a nerdy butler? Is he worried to kill off your character since you could fire him? I really need more details here.

So I am a bit worried about the future of the forums revenue considering the latest forum announcements. Has there been an initiative to archive Game Room games before the servers get the plug pulled three months after Lowtax stops paying the fees? I know F&Fs are safe at least.

Is there footage of him giving them to Frank? I don't know if that part was recorded. I can ask him about it tonight. He was genuinely astonished and amused that he's getting mildly internet famous over this. He was just doing something nice for one of his idols: a guy that's provided enjoyment to him and his friends over so many years. Macdeo Lurjtux posted:Is it a court ordered thing? It's more an honorary/silly title than anything. He's actually an anesthesiologist who travels the country for work and prefers to crash with friends when possible instead of getting extended-stay hotels. He tidies up and brings in deliveries/mail while he's around, so we call him the Butler. The first time he stayed with me, all I had to offer him was my couch and I never once asked him for anything in return. The day before he left town he bought me a battle-ready sword that was very my style as a thank-you. He's like the polar opposite of that witch in Beauty and the Beast--instead of traveling around punishing the wicked, he goes around rewarding kindness and giving surprise gifts. He's genuinely one of the nicest guys I've ever met, and is always super generous with gifts like that, so I'd never consider asking him for rent or anything, ever. neaden posted:So the butler likes RPGs and stuff too. Maybe I arrange to run a one-shot or something for him before he leaves the next time. Elfgames posted:Maybe blasphemeral should buy the forums Ha! While I do have a rack server running in the basement, it's actually not mine. It belongs to another friend, and I doubt it has the capacity to run all of S-A. And I'm sure I don't have the internet throughput. I feel that, at this point, I should point out that I'm not actually money-rich. Friendship-rich, perhaps, and lucky for it, but not that doesn't quite have the liquidity of other currencies. Blasphemeral fucked around with this message at 18:10 on Aug 30, 2017 |

new blogpost for The Next Project is up; trying to clarify/streamline the various forms of character customization Currently there are Archetypes, Roles, Subclasses, and Paths -- I would kinda like to reduce that down to 2 or 3 things, and use a more intuitive naming structure.

5th edition fighters do the best damage of any class in the game, they're just boring out of combat. Also it's a bad game. Try Dungeon World or something.

Realtalk - there have been some good recommendations already. But from a design perspective, I think wizards are inherently problematic for a whole shitload of reasons - it's best to do without them, if possible.

The only inherent problem to wizards is there's no immediately obvious or universal limit to what magic can do, which is both not actually a problem in a game designed to accomodate it, or something you should firmly establish when you do class and/or setting design.

I think divination as a player option can be an issue too, or at least put too great a burden on the GM for what you get out of it, but I certainly think there are plenty of ways to make magic users work mechanically without having balance or narrative problems.

It did win an Indie Groundbreaker Award, which is a separate award handled by the Indie Games Developer Network, who are very cool people. If you are looking for a game where fighter types are not overshadowed by wizards, Fellowship is a good candidate, as most of the playbooks are physically-oriented. The one playbook that goes hard on being a wizard is very wizard-y, but can only do a big encounter-ending spell once per session and it costs half their HP, so it takes them out for a bit when they use it while still letting them get that cool wizardry moment. They're much more Gandalf than Elminster that way.

Of course, the issue is that most games aren't designed around this problem - I'm sure Ars Magica is, because that's what it's supposed to be about. It's more precise to say what you did - they're not necessarily problematic, but the system/setting that they're in has to be designed around those no immediately obvious or universal limits. The issue is that most games with wizards are not properly designed to take those limits into account, D&D being the chief offender, and it quickly becomes most people's (mine included) understanding of what wizards in games look like. Now if you want to talk about flavor ideas that are closely tied to dangerous mechanics -- I'm still not going to say "inherently," because that's ridiculous -- then forget wizards in general, and consider Chronomancers. They're basically a giant glowing sign that says "my two favorite things are breaking the action economy and making the GM do five times as much work."
