Yulie Ahrki Her early years were a blur of hooded figures, dark rooms, and chanting in an alien tongue so vile that it split the lips and cracked the teeth in time. She heard it so much that she grew up speaking it just as naturally as Reikspiel. There was the coppery smell of blood, the stench of humanity in stuffy catacombs, and under it all a cloying smell that defied description and curdled in the nose. Then, one day, she was taken away from that place in the dead of night by the people she came to call Mother and Father. Although she was too young to understand at the time, they were taking pains to avoid detection. Eventually, they came to a prepared cabin in the depths of some forest or another. They burned their robes and symbols in the backyard, and the grass never grew in that spot again. They tried to pretend things had always been this way, but Yulie knew better. Father and Mother insisted it had all been a dream and she had always lived here with them. Father beat her when she spoke to her imaginary friends in the alien tongue of her childhood, and she learned to keep it to herself. Mother taught her divining, palm reading, and chicanery. She insisted that this was the only magic Yulie should ever deal in, and that all other kinds were forbidden and never to be meddled with. Nowadays she wonders who they were really trying to convince: her or themselves. Mother fell ill suddenly when she was 14, and did not survive the winter. Father grew distant and paranoid; he sat up late into the night, staring at the door with a weapon in hand and jumping at every little sound. One day he went out to chop wood; while he was gone, a hooded figure arrived at the door and told Yulie it was time to come home. She followed him willingly. The cabin held little attraction for her. She never turned back, not even when she heard Father's wail of despair in the distance. They nearly made it out of the forest before the Beastmen jumped them. The man in the hood told her to run for the road, and said he would catch up to her. She never saw him again. With little knowledge of the Empire or its people, Yulie wandered the roads from village to village. She used what her mother had taught her to gain a reputation as a seer; half the art of predicting the future was just paying closer attention to the world than the average brain-dead peasant anyway, so it wasn't very difficult to prophesy accurately. This will be a terrible year for potatoes, she intones. Of course, she knows that because potatoes are always bad in years with a heavy frost before the harvest, but if they want to believe she read that from their palms or the stars or the will of the Gods, who is she to dissuade them? For years now, Yulie has been content to follow her whims, confident that they represent the guidance of fate and her true purpose will be revealed soon enough. So when she got the urge to take a boat ride out of Marienburg, she didn't even bother asking where the ship was going. She just paid her fare and took her place. It was only once the boat left sight of shore that she felt the distinctive pang of future doom, but maybe that was just in response to the roiling black clouds on the horizon. In any case, now she's sopping wet and standing on a Norsican shore with only the vaguest idea of where she even is. Yet despite that, she has a gut feeling that this is exactly where she belongs, and that her great destiny will be fulfilled here. Soon. pre:Name: Yulie Ahrki Race: Human Career: Seer Character Profile Primary : | WS | BS | S | T | AG | INT | WP | FEL| Starting : | 36 | 30 | 30 | 30 | 32 | 36 | 37 | 33 | Advances : | 05 | 00 | 05 | 00 | 05 | 10 | 05 | 10 | Taken : | 05 | 00 | 00 | 00 | 00 | 10 | 00 | 10 | Gained : | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | Current : | 41 | 30 | 30 | 30 | 32 | 46 | 37 | 43 | Secondary : | A | W | SB | TB | M | MAG | IP | FP | Starting : | 1 | 13 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Advances : | 0 | 02 | - | - | - | 0 | - | - | Taken : | 0 | 01 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Gained : | -- | 01 | - | - | - | - | - | 1 | Current : | 1 | 15 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4 | Skills: Charm Animal Common Knowledge (The Empire) Gossip Perception Performer (Palm Reader) Speak Arcane Language (Daemonic) Speak Language (Reikspiel) Talents: Hardy Keen Senses Luck Public Speaking Sturdy Trappings: Instruments of Divination (Dice, Cards, a Chicken, etc.) Hand Weapon (Short Sword) Dagger Common Clothing + Cloak Backpack Blanket Wooden Tankard + Cutlery Gold Crowns (12) Career Exits: XP + Advances: Fel +5 Fel +5 WS +5 Int +5 Int +5 Wound +1 Wounds, Fate: 10 8 Random Talents: 26 Gold: 12 Dachshundofdoom fucked around with this message at 07:57 on Sep 2, 2017 |

Henry Walfot, Human Entertainer So look, sure maybe some things went missing at the last house Henry played at. Did that mean he took them? No. But that didn't stop the mob that ran him out of town. Henry had to drop the things he took just to get away. A couple of badly drawn wanted posters prompted a further retreat onto the ship. Ah the ship. Great place to practice and play his lute. Sailors were glad enough for the entertainment he didn't even need to work. Then came the damm shipwrecking. Luckily Henry knew how to swim and made it ashore safely. Now hes just hoping to find a fire to dry off at and make his next move back to civilization. pre:Name: Henry Walfot Race: Human Career: Entertainer Height: 5'10" Weight: 165 lbs. Pieter "Wissen" Lionson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urV8MIcLDFk Many years ago, a corn-haired lad from the southlands made an astute observation: Wissenland is shite. The food is shite. The drink is shite. The people are shite. There is nothing but grey, grim acceptance of the misery of the world in hopes that the next one will be better. Pieter Lionson left his family, abandoning a long tradition of Lionson handgunners and cannoneers that stretched back generations. Let someone else grimly load their rifle in the face of the greenskin hoard, with naught but the hope for another meal of rockbread and watery ale to spur them forward. The family was greatly shamed through his actions - he is sure they grimly bore it. So Pieter went north, until he found the furthest thing from Wissenland that he could - Marienburg, and its great port. There was a great deal of skepticism from the captain when a young dryfoot volunteered for the whaling ship. The other crew didn't like it either - the hazing was constant and intense. To their bafflement, the more contempt that the other sailors showed young Pieter the happier he seemed. "Finally," he thought to himself, "An emotion." On his third voyage that all changed. They were three weeks away when the beast appeared. It struck at night, a great mass of tentacles that wrapped itself around the ship and struck at the crew. Some were merely thrown overboard. Others were dragged under, never to come back up. One of those tentacles got its suckers on Pieter, but he managed to strike the rubbery thing over and over with his boarding axe, until it relented. Soon after the creature disappeared back into the deep, and Peiter was spared a watery doom. When the wound finally healed, the scare resembled the emblem of Manann. The captain and crew declared it a sign, and in the next port paid a good artist to tattoo the scar into a proper emblem, and ever since Pieter has been considered "lucky." For a bunch of superstitious sailors, this went a long way. That 17 years ago. Now, Pieter "the Wissen" has earned his keep as a veteran whaler on many successful voyages. Veteran enough to become an officer, even command a ship of his own. He told his crew his intentions to strike off on his own, and they drank three taverns dry as a farewell to Lucky Wissen. He had heard that there might be a ship off in Nordland in need of a veteran, perhaps even a captain. It was enough to book passage on the first ship headed that way, to start a new life and perhaps make enough riches to settle somewhere and live out old age in peace. It was going to be a novelty for Pieter, to be on a ship as a passenger rather than a sailor. But as soon as his foot hit the gangplank, his lucky scar started to ache. As he lays, soaked and half drowned on some gods-forsaken beach, Pieter wishes he was more superstitious. A more superstitious man would have stepped right off that gangplank and waited for another boat. Instead he shrugged it off, and they sailed right into a storm. Pieter had tried to help the crew, but it was no use. They had sailed right into a cyclone, and there was nothing to do but pray. When the boat started breaking up, it was every man and woman for themselves. He has no idea where he is. He isn't even sure if this is Nordland. The only thing he has managed to do is throw off his clothes to let them and himself dry in the sun. He has managed to salvage most of his sailors' kit, even grabbed his bag of coin. An inauspicious start to his independent career, it has to be said... pre:Name: Pieter "Wissen" Race: Human Career: Whaler Height: 5'10'' Weight: 155 Hair: Corn-yellow Eyes: Grey Blue Age: 33 Siblings: 3 Starsign: Vobist the Faint Birthplace: Wissenland Distinguishing Mark: Tattoo Character Profile Primary : | WS | BS | S | T | AG | INT | WP | FEL| Assigned : | 13 | 12 | 15 | 11 | 09 | 13 | 20 | 05 | Starting : | 38 | 32 | 40 | 31 | 34 | 33 | 45 | 25 | Advances : | 05 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 00 | 00 | 00 | Taken : | 05 | 05 | 10 | 10 | 00 | 00 | 00 | 00 | Current : | 43 | 37 | 50 | 41 | 34 | 33 | 45 | 25 | Secondary : | A | W | SB | TB | M | MAG | IP | FP | Starting : | 1 | 12 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Advances : | - | 2 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Taken : | - | 0 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Current : | 1 | 12 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Skills: Consume Alcohol Common Knowledge (The Empire) Gossip Navigation Perception Row Sail Speak Language (Reikspiel) Swim Talents: Coolheaded (+5% Starting Willpower) Excellent Vision (+10% bonus on Perception tests using sight & Lip Reading) Hardy (+1 Starting Wound) Lightning Reflexes (+5% Starting Agility) Seasoned Traveller (+10% on Common Knowledge/Speak Language) Very Strong (+5% Starting Strength) Warrior Born (+5% Starting Weapon Skill) Trappings: Dagger x2 Hand Weapon (Boarding Axe) Spear Lantern with four pints of Whale Oil Light Armour (Leather Jack) Pipe Bottle of Good Spirits Lucky Charm (Tattoo) Common clothing Tattered cloak Backpack containing a blanket Wooden tankard Wooden cutlery set 14 Gold Random Talents (2) (Warrior Born) Reroll Duplicate Talent Reroll Duplicate Again (Lightning Reflexes) 11 Wound Points 2 Fate Points 14 Gold professor_curly fucked around with this message at 19:30 on Sep 6, 2017 |

(Sigh) So, what did I do wrong in my character? So I know to avoid that in the future? Given how my character was actually Done, as opposed to a character sheet with no background or other information? Or did I just get unlucky and apply for a position that someone who was promised a spot wanted? Long story short, I'd just like to know what removed me from consideration so I don't make that mistake in the future.

Up until about 4 days ago most of the group was going to be nonacolytes and I said I was making picks in the channel and a few people spoke up about it. I'm not gonna pretend that wanting to play with people you already know instead of strangers isn't basic human functionality on behalf of whatever variety of internet etiquette is dominant on this forum. If it's really that upsetting to people I'll talk it out, but I find the outrage about it kinda weird tbh.

Putting out open apps, letting people waste their time writing up characters, then taking three people who didn't even bother to finish their sheets after a long-rear end application time is garbage duder, and you know it. If you just wanted to play with your friends, don't put out open apps, it's that simple.

poo poo, it's pretty obvious that your friends who didn't finish their sheets didn't particularly want to play with you in the first place.

I wouldn't say it's about friendship unless we're using a pretty broad definition. They're just people I can communicate with easily and have experience posting with. Schizotek posted:No I really don't. Being chosen to participate in voluntary recreational activities isn't usually meritocratic. I'll buy that maybe the effort put into making a character sheet changes the dynamic a little bit, but ultimately this is a game not a school/job application. I'mma let the half dozen other people who agreed that it was lovely speak for me here. I'm not really interested in a dialogue other than 'don't waste a bunch of people's time in the future, thanks'.

Waci posted:(2017-08-27 23:36:02) TravelSight: Schizotek, camp follower isn't a prostitute though Pretty much any civilian that follows around a medieval-early modern army is gonna be labelled a 'camp follower'. It comes up in the milhist thread a lot. Soldier's wives & widows do a lot of the work that gets outsourced to contractors now, like laundry, maintenance and cooking, not to mention scavenging the battlefield and selling poo poo to soldiers they don't really need in exchange for stuff that they probably do need.
