If this were like any other story I would expect something to go wrong (they get stranded somehow, someone gets sick or injured, they encounter some beast of the forest, the usual) that forces them even closer, but since this is GC it's at least as likely that this will just be an ordinary, life-changing expedition with handsome science boy. And that's fine.

Is there just too much walking involved in this or is the woman who can turn herself into fire struggling with the heat?

I don't think they (Surma/Annie lineage) produce actual fire? It's clearly magical "fire" that can selectively burn someone, selectively produce heat, etc. The rule "Surma is flame resistant and heat resistant" might not be a thing. Or....she is resistant, but only after transformation? Thrre could be many ways her flame capabilities work, and I suspect we may learn some about it when Surma reveals her nature to Carver. For example, perhaps she's baking right now because she doesn't want to show off her fire elemental form.

There's a good "it's not the heat (fire), it's the humidity" joke somewhere, but I'm not finding it.

Alternatively, backpacking through the jungle is hard. Heat, humidity, bugs, rough ground, overgrowth, and I'm guessing that for all of Surma's forest adventures, she's never done a straight up backpacking expedition where she has to carry everything she needs to survive on her back. I bet those

This does look more like Surma got a ticket to the gunshow then a trip to the jungle.

EmmyOk posted:Eyes Only is making me laugh a lot but also curious are they saying "no remote viewing/scrying" or something? Eyes Only is a jargon term for classified documents intended to be read by a particular person or people, rather than being available to anyone with sufficient clearance. This being Gunnerkrigg, there could easily be more significance to the phrase than that, though.
