That's because every time they tried to replace it the prototype ended up costing $50,000 and somehow acquired VTOL capability.

Off-topic, but I', hoping one of you can help me: So I'm writing an RPG campaign in the mythic scandinavian iron age. The primary theme will be deconstructing my players dumb notions about the IA such as history channel shows and the like. While there will be dragons, your loving sword+2 will be made of hammered iron is what I'm saying. Now, an essential part of this is brushing off my knowledge on what daily life and technology was like in the iron age, do any of you guys have some good reads or websites I could check out to get a feel of things? This site is reporting that production on the third HBO WWII series The Mighty Eighth about the air campaign over Europe is finally beginning production, and that HBO is going to spend $500m on it. Folks, I'm unbelievably hype.

zoux posted:This scene from Memphis Belle hosed me up as a kid. God yes. I also remember getting a huge laugh at the "there's a hole in the wing fuel tank as big as my dick!" "well we shouldn't be in much trouble then" exchange. Personally the scene I 100% expect to see - since it's pretty much standard fare for any "look at how hosed up the bombing campaign could get" literature - is the one where they airplane is all hosed up, needs to belly land, and they can't get the ball turret gunner out so they need to basically say good bye and try to talk him through becoming a grease stain on the runway. Tias posted:I want to be hype, but 500 million USD could just be spent better. On what? I mean, assuming you're actually a movie production company making entertainment and not just donating it to feed kids in Somalia or something. edit: the budget really makes me take notice, because a show about aviation is one of the few places where more, better special effects can really, REALLY make a huge difference in the quality of the final product. You can go low budget with dudes in foxholes and still have a good character story, or go medium budget and have some impressive explosions and whatnot, but dudes flying and dying in airplanes will just look cheesy if you don't step up and lay down some cash to make it look right.

There's an Amazing Stories like that (that also hosed me up since I still remember it all these years later.) It's resolved by magical cartoon wheels. That's also a Steven Speilberg joint.

Me 264s over New York City in an imaginary 1945 AMERICA BOMBERS 1943: Eris is Goddess The really, really, condensed version of big bomber development in 1943 in the Third Reich is this: as the Nazis go around and around without getting anywhere The slightly longer version is this is possibly the most chaotic thing I've ever written, so if y'all have writing notes for me please give them. Like that gif above, here's another image that is worth 1000 words: [link]

Tias posted:Off-topic, but I', hoping one of you can help me: Jared Diamond's book Collapse has a couple chapters on Scandinavians, mostly Iceland, a lot of Greenland history and some bits about of those tiny islands in the North Sea they "settled". Be prepared for lots of stories about Scandinavians doing dumb poo poo like Greenlanders being overrun by Inuit thanks to being too stupid to live, Norwegian kings being assaulted and angering the entirety of North America because apparently the Scandinavian first-contact-protocol back then was "let's try stabbing them to see if they bleed". Exception: Iceland. Because those weirdos actually survived and thrived! (The other civilizations he looks at are worth it, too: Like the Easter Islanders destroying their island by building more and more dumbass statues, or how the last Mayan uprising very nearly won against the Europeans, but then everyone had to go home to harvest food. Probably not what you want, though. I'm just pointing out the other neat things in the book.)

To be fair, Austria Hungary was missing seven out of 16 standing army corps for most of the July Crisis before WWI, because those corps had harvest leave.

golden bubble posted:To be fair, Austria Hungary was missing seven out of 16 standing army corps for most of the July Crisis before WWI, because those corps had harvest leave. For the Mayans, the problem was extreme: Their culture had no wheels and no pack animals at all, so they had to carry their food around on their backs if they wanted it transported it somewhere. This gave Mayan armies a ridiculous short reach -in Pre-European times, Mayan armies often had difficulties even getting to their next door neighbors. Also, apparently they had serious trouble with food production, anyway: Their history is a sordid history from cities growing until food production can't keep up, followed by total collapse shortly after. Followed then by other cities now growing and expanding, often thanks to survivors of the older cities being integrated and then the same thing happened again! When the first Europeans showed up, they sometimes just walked past ruins of those long dead cities, since the incredibly dense jungle tended to make them disappear in short order. Sometimes the Mayans themselves had lost all knowledge about those places, which didn't help matters either

Speaking of WWII bombs: https://www.yahoo.com/news/70-000-evacuated-over-wwii-bomb-frankfurt-154435398.html 70,000 evacuated in Frankfurt while they wait for a 4000-lb blockbuster to be disarmed or moved. Or disarmed and moved. But hopefully disarmed at some point.
