In the newest chapter of my Getting a Job at University saga, the HR team apparently had some changes and there is now a Acting Hiring Director who will be reviewing the hiring approval tomorrow morning. Me and the other dude who were given verbals are in limbo as a result. But this is at least some news and they're going to give me an update at the end of this week. Hiring manager apologized twice in the e-mail and said he would keep me informed.

No unauthorized software on company computers, period. If they need something not on the company standard, they need to follow the chain of command and go over why it should be there, and you should be involved to let management know what the risks and issues are. Don't give people who aren't IT installation rights.

Are ad blockers free for enterprise use? If they are, are they on your approved software list? I've gone the forgiveness over permission route for a while now. My job involves all sorts of googling, blocking ads is blocking one of the biggest security risks. It's as important as antivirus.

Set up a Pi-hole VM and use it as a DNS forwarder for your domain controllers. Instant ad-blocking for your entire network without having to install anything on your client machines, and it's Free Software so there's no licensing problem.

DNS based blocking is useless for a ton of ad malware, you really do need an actual adblocker in the browser to defend against things, especially with constantly updating lists. uBlock Origin is free software as well under the GPLv3, so no licensing problems there and it's supported on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge which is more than enough to cover reasonable web browsing requirements. If a business line thing requires you to still use IE or Safari, then the organization has much bigger problems.

When I got to my current place, everyone still had admin rights. We deploy AdBlock Plus for IE, Firefox, and Chrome. One of the best things we've done to cut back on malware. OpenDNS is another. Host-based BitDefender for our servers and VDIs. Non-persistent VDIs that reboot nightly are helpful. Then things like application whitelisting, FSRM to monitor for lots of file changes or to keep an eye out for known ransomware file extensions. We've actually been doing pretty well these days, knock on wood.

So when I finish the AT in a week I’ll be returning to Houston that’s obviously underwater. What are the effects of natural disasters on job prospects? Also a bunch of people have been telling me to put hiking the Appalachian Trail on my resume but that seems...weird. I will definitely spin the experience into a fantastic tale and how it totally makes me a better employee and isn’t some pointless 5 month employment gap, but to put it on the resume seems inappropriate.

I would put it on there. Only really awful places that don't believe in work/life balance or get angry when you quit will react negatively. I personally would put you higher on the pile for it. If hired I would tell you that the PCT seems lovely and not to quit, do a leave of absence.

Definitely put it on your resume in a section for any other personal achievements / accolades you may have. It is a significant accomplishment and at the very least may serve as a topic for small talk in an interview. As for returning to Houston... do you have a choice? If there's nothing keeping you there I would be heading somewhere else.

My GF reworked my resume and included a hobby/interests section that had my nerdshame and cultfit activities.

I am spoilt by being able to get a 100Mbps leased line to an industrial estate on the edge of a rural town for under £500/month. I don't even think "what if we can't get good connectivity" any more. I'm sure it's going to bite me in the rear end one day.

I got on the elevator and there was a tall chubby guy around my age already there, speaking loudly on his cellphone. He looked like Jeff Garlin. A few floors later as I step off he says "You're so thin... gently caress YOU!" and starts laughing as the doors close. Felt like I was on a TV show.

Goddamn everybody i owe this forum so much for stressing the importance of learning powershell. AD accounts needed their extension added under ipphone so they could sync to a program through LDAP. An hour of powershell scripting later and I: a) made sure values currently under ipphone were migrated to "telephone number" b) used a csv to import extensions into appropriate user accounts for over 100 accounts. It feels good to be practiced enough in powershell that I can rattle poo poo off as needed and only pull up technet for minor stuff, like get-aduser using 'telephonenumber' and set-aduser using 'officephone' (what the gently caress microsoft)

You can't replicate on-prem VMware workloads into AWS. I can see the appeal for people who have a bunch of Windows servers running pets and want to add a DR site without buying hardware / paying for co-lo / learning a different tool for replication or backup. If they could get some lower spec hosts and drop the price accordingly then it's probably quite well suited to that sort of use.

If you have a massive VMware installation (think banks) this would give you a turn key workload shift. There are still a lot of companies out there that simply don't know any better and VMware is there to take their money.

The employer I left, the one that let me go without finishing my two weeks , has decided to gently caress with my final pay check. They decided to not pay me any pto (texas requires at least 2 days ) and also didn't pay me for the day they walked me out after I refused their counter offer from the CFO. I have already reached out to the HR directer today and haven't heard back. I am required to give them a reasonable time to fix the error by law but otherwise its the department of labor I go! Doesn't even cost me lawyer fees.
