I don't think people are worried about implementation. I think people are worried about having to buy a ton of custom dice. At least sustained fire, scatter, and misfire dice worked across Warhammer, 40k, Necromunda, Gorkamorka, and maybe Mordheim. You never needed more than one scatter or misfire, and I think sustained fire capped at 3. And these could all easily be shared between players.

I don't want to make a judgement based on a single photo, but to me those custom dice look placed next to models with intent. If that's the case, you're going to need a bunch of them. They could also just be there because it's a photo. We'll have to wait until someone who has played chimes in.

To me it looks like the custom dice are a) sustained fire dice (the ones with the burst marks) and b) status dice (the others, for tracking pins/downs/overwatch/ etc.), so it's hardly likely you'd need to buy a ton of them.

Note that I imagine the scatter dice also qualify as custom since only 30k uses them any more out of GW's other games.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

The Escher look ok, they don't quite measure up on the originals but those were some really good models so that's not a surprise. I am glad that they're putting Escher into the starter set, and that the figures make them look both tough and ready to deal some pain - there aren't any goofy poses or that kind of thing at first glance. Goliath looks pretty good as well, but I wasn't too worried because slab-muscled dudes with ridiculous hair is pretty much GWs' wheelhouse.

I am actually ok with a boardgame inclusion, maybe it will let me rope more people into trying it and making the transition from complex boardgames to tabletops. I guess we'll see what the rules are like.

It looks like there are eight dice for each side, so 16 total - that should be more than enough. Unless something is drastically changing (even with the 8th ed rules,) all you're going to have to deal with are scatter for grenades and to hit/defense (?) dice. I highly doubt that dice are going to be used to mark a model - the photo just has dice scattered around to represent a game in progress. Model marking is the job of all those little round tokens.

I was a little concerned about this being a board game, but I can see that a lot of people don't have a huge NM table built up somewhere, and this is a nice concession on GW's part. Might be interesting to see how this would play on a Space Hulk board. I am really hoping that the SWA-friendly variant of the new NM takes advantage of the new rules as well, because alternating activations work so much better for this game.

Aye. One thing I've noticed is that when people are complaining about shooting being OP/CC being poo poo, they don't have anywhere near enough terrain and scatter on their boards.

Never had issues getting into combat in the past (when me and my mates were combining 2+ Necro+Outlanders sets) or at the club, which has more than enough terrain sets.

Assuming they're something other than scatter or sustained fire dice, the concern is that you'd have to buy if you skipped out on the starter itself, and that gives GW the opportunity to charge whatever they feel like. If they're just an optional way to mark status, then you can skip out. If they're misfire or scatter dice, it's fairly easy to sub them out for a normal dice. What gets annoying is when you have something like Saga and the dice need to be instantly recognizable. You can totally play Saga without the custom dice, but it's a headache and that's where the issue with "FFG style dice" comes in.

We don't 100% know what's going on here, but from the pictures it doesn't look like that big of a deal so I'm willing to be optimistic. But if I have to spend $20+ on a pack of dice because I don't like the starting gangs, I'm going to pass on the game altogether. I wouldn't mind spending $40 on a nice rulebook as my "buy in", but I draw the line at over priced dice. But again, let me stress that we don't know or have a good reason to think this yet. I'm just saying what the concern is.

And as others have said, the board game angle might actually help draw people into the game who wouldn't normally play a miniatures game, so in the end it might be a net positive.

Edit: And on the topic of terrain, I'd be happy with the old card platforms and bulkheads. That poo poo can't be expensive to produce and would give a much better feel and atmosphere than a flat board.

I'm semi-interested in the NM box. The models look nice, if over complicated (again). Though I do want to see them in person to see just how overly big they are at 32mm scale.

I'm super excited about Necromunda. I pre-ordered it from my lgs.

I played back in the 90s with a 4-person gaming group so we had one person playing Goliaths/Escher/Delaques/Cawdor. I had Escher and I kept rolling Settlements so I ended up with every Escher model out, plus some dupe juves and most of the other random crap you could take.

I never owned the terrain so board game style doesn't bother me if it's fun.

Blood Bowl's special dice seem to be working out well for GW so I can see why they're doing that instead of charts. Lots of locals have been picking up multiple sets of GW BB dice to match their teams and seem happy with it.

I can agree that the studio Escher are looking a little more lumpy than muscular but I'm hoping that's a paint issue rather than sculpting. I've seen that on a couple other GW sculpts where the box paint style didn't look as nice as other people's work.

I should take some pics of my old stuff. It was some of the first stuff I painted in high school.

They probably wanted to make sure that they gave a double dose of nostalgia love, if they’re reworking the actual game mechanics. I bet future plastic kits will start having some new thrown in with more old.

They're iconic and one of the few gangs that looked so good that they didn't bother resculpting them back in the day, either. And like Shadin said, NM is a heavy nostalgia game, so any major change to the core gangs is going to get a lot of blowback.

Yeah, probably the same idea as the Blood Bowl release. Basic gameplay and starter armies in the big box focused on the included terrain/board and then the Season 1 book that gave a bunch of extra armies and all the league play content.

I'm pretty okay with how Blood Bowl was done. It's been a very successful release locally at least. The board game feel of an all-in-one box got a bunch of new players interested. While I haven't bought anything new for Blood Bowl, the new dice sets, stand alone boards and new models have been pretty popular. I'm getting to play a bunch of games with my ancient custom team and old NAF dice.

I've got Necromunda minis, community rules are available and I've got access to terrain but there's been no interest in years.

Well, that should change shortly.

I'm really hoping they don't pull a BB and only have tables for Escher and Goliath gangs - it will be really annoying for the other guys in my group to be excluded because they run Orlocks or whatever. Hopefully they'll keep the old system of everyone being a generic ganger with different weapon tables and stat increases.

Yeah, it could go either way. My heart tells me since BB went so well that they might go with the Game in a Box model again and have the Necromunda Gang Season 1 book have the other gangs and more advanced rulesets in it. I guess we'll find out shortly.

Necromunda might be a little harder to keep the hype train going if they wait too long to release more gangs/models for gangs. Four gangs really isn't enough.

Even some minimal support to play something not Escher/Goliath would probably work, if we know more support is coming.

There's a whole bunch of fantasy sportsballmans out there to choose from so most people have been able to find a combination of team rules/model aesthetics they like. BB having no weapons helps tremendously when picking whatever dumb poo poo you want to build a team from.

I like Blood Bowl but having both the rules book and the season 1 rules book there is no loving reason they shouldn't have been the same book.

If the season 1 rules weren't done in time they should have put them out on the internet for free for everybody who already bought the rules to reward them, and include it in future printings.

Yeah that's what they should do if they want to have their cake and eat it too; make the rules free to download but sell really fancy thick bound books with limited edition grognard poo poo.

Make tons of money off the whales while still letting the small fish play the hobby and spend money on minis.

People with disposable income would still buy the books to have a nice fancy hardcover copy to play with, its still nicer than printing them out on paper or reading on your phone. But having to buy the rules now for lots of money to even get started playing keeps people from playing at all. Better to get them hooked and sell a fancy rulebook later down the road.

It's dumb from a day zero DLC model, but it makes sense if they're selling the box as a complete game. They don't want to put rules for "things you don't have" in there to frustrate hypothetical new players.

I mean, I don't especially like it but I get it.

They seem to want the core box to be a self contained stand-alone product. So you get everything you need to play a "standard" game of BB or Necromunda, literally in one box.

It's an interesting decision, and we'll probably see it repeated with the other SG releases.
