That doesn't actually sound that bad. I read on Duramax forums that it books for like 6-8 hours of labor + parts. It took me like 6 hours yesterday to do the passenger side and like 3 today for the driver's. Only $225ish into parts and I took a couple days off work to do it, so not too bad. Celebrated with a little evening romp in the twisty mountain roads.

My favorite is the markup on air filters. $60 or more to pop open a plastic housing and R&R a filter that cost you $2.

I pay for glass, tires/alignments, and terrible rusty jobs now. Before I would tackle them but I'm getting to the point of "gently caress that poo poo." No torch and it's too big of a headache I'd rather pay for. Though it was painful paying almost $1k for near rear shackles and leaf springs on my beater truck.

I paid for brakes on the wife's car, because $120 is worth basically not screwing up a Saturday. I have a lot of other poo poo to do. If the next set lasts another 90k, I won't mind paying to have them swapped out again, either. Re: air filters. Yeah, Honda wanted I think $109 to do the cabin and engine filters. LOL yeah ok. Naw y'all just keep doing oil changes for basically free, and give me a list of the other stuff that's due.

Although, I guess prey on ppl who don't know poo poo about gently caress with cars? I'll do a dash, I won't do glass (I have before), but mostly because I want the safelite/speedy warranty on it sealing and stuff. I don't have a Coats or other tire machine, so I outsource that and alignments. I think we can agree that there are services that /have/ to be outsourced unless you happen to have some serious equipment. I refuse to buy a tire machine (especially ones I can afford) because they are scary as gently caress to me (and amortized cost of the machine would mean I'd to change like 40 sets of tires to get back what I have in it, and that would take like 10 years).

Engine filter is usually easy as pie but as I understand cabin filters in more annoying models can involve removing part of the dash/lower center console. I'd pay for that because I'd probably scratch the trim.

Yeah I think only the LS3, LS7, L92, and L99 got rectangle heads, and I don't think you would want to use them on small displacement motors anyway. Did any 6.0L motors come with them? I don't think so, but I'm not as much up to speed on gen4.

Wasabi the J posted:Do ECU flashes really do stuff? Short answer: yes Slightly longer answer: yes but it depends heavily on what type of engine (naturally aspirated, turbocharged, turbodiesel) how much you'll actually notice a difference. Generally turbocharged and diesels respond most noticeably to flashes, because they tend to be tuned fairly conservatively from the factory for emissions/economy/durability reasons.

Interestingly the guy from ford when mighty car mods was interviewing him said that they've pushed the RS motor about as far as you can from factory while retaining reliability. Wonder really how much more you can get out of them before they start to loose reliability?

^ doesn't the intercooler have a weird blanking plate on a portion of it? What's that about? Most turbo cars I've seen don't have one.

Olympic Mathlete posted:^ isn't the intercooler on those able to take more power hence the weird blanking plate on a portion of it? Yeah you can squeeze about another 45 hp and 55 lb/ft of torque out of them on stock parts on 93 octane safely. If you are confident in your ability to math and blend fuels, you can get 70 hp and 60 lb/ft on e30 safely. And yes, removing the intercooler blanking plate was literally the first thing I did to my car when I drove it home from the dealership. Unless you live somewhere that regularly sees 90% humidity it's not necessary and is free cooling capacity for literally ripping off a rubber sticker.

Terrible Robot posted:Short answer: yes Yeah good explanation. I tried years ago to do a "tune" on a 4.7l mopar and a 5.3l gm, and there were minimal gains. Fast forward to EFILive on my Duramax, and with only a DPF delete and tune, I gained 40-180hp (selectable) with ~ 80-360+ tq. Basically I had to upgrade my transmission to handle the power a tune brought to the table.

Larrymer posted:The environment weeps. loving lol. In order for the DPF to work correctly, the LMM Duramax uses a post injection to shoot as much as 1.5 extra gallons of diesel into the exhaust to initiate the regen cycle (also washing one or more cylinder's exhaust valves with diesel causing reported under-lubrication problems). Observed mpg averages were in the low 11-12 range when the truck was stock. I made the switch around 70k miles and the DPF was at the point of needing replaced from over-sooting anyways. The tune I ended up going with must have some excellent air/fuel maps because I don't soot out the tail pipe at all, while noticing a significant increase in performance (especially while towing). My average fuel consumption is closer to 18-19mpg now. I'll take the decreased consumption as a benefit to the environment. This is the last truck I'll need/own, and I'd like it to make it to 300-400k miles without needing a rebuild when the stopgap DPF/regen poo poo fucks up the engine.

I always thought he was full of poo poo tho. It's been a legend/myth I've heard too. Long story short, where I live/lived I am not worried about it, as NC is emissions sniff/look exempt for diesel. If they really want to go after someone, they can go after the 6bt guys running 8" stacks with smoke tunes. My truck looks stock, sounds stock, and doesn't blow any soot. The only way you'd know there was anything different would be to look underneath and see the disco'ed connectors from the fore/aft pressure sensors and the EGT probe (and the 65 pound can of poo poo missing). Before moving from AK to NC, we were thinking about taking over my parent's estate in Vermont, and that's the only reason I hadn't done the tune sooner. DMV enforcement patrols are allegedly trained on what trucks do/don't have emissions equip. and supposedly can levy the EPA $10k fine on you for not having the stuff, plus you won't pass inspection. I prefer to live in a free state, though.

I am just in awe at the logistics of a diesel engine's combustion characteristics, and when those things are at full whistle, how much air/fuel is passing through them. I also hate loud noises too (mild military-related issues and hearing impairments), so the train horns really catch me off guard. Last time I went to SEMA was in 2014 and it must have been the year of the lifted bro'd-out dually. Dual 12" stacks and quad Kleinn horns were the cost of entry, apparently. They look cool, but I prefer to tow with my truck and make questionable automotive decisions with my project cars!
