You know, I never appreciated how incredibly dark a lot of these strips were when I first read them. It's weird how a dumb comic about cats really nails some of the emotional things in life.

And then there's hot tub brawls.
Two strips forward is the one where a young Beef takes a letter for a vagrant, and I never noticed the "and [linebreak] and" typo in its last panel before. I sympathize with young Beef watching the timers on the dryers but man is it ever depressing.

Hopefully without having to invoke the part about tuberculosis and the Hantavirus as well.

Edit: and shortly afterwards we have men who had proper-rear end names. "Birds trembled in place as the sobs of the widow roamed the hillsides and vales" is such a lovely little image.

Wow, I don't think I'd ever seen this one. I feel enriched, yet the specter of "no new Achewood" has unexpectedly drawn even closer.

Oh, the network slogan is true -- "watch FOX and be damned for all eternity!"

Todd's Fiesta Name is that he's completely loving tweaking.

To this day I am perpetually disappointed that there is not actually a Fiesta Max in Las Vegas. Does anyone know what Onstad actually based that on?

I don't think it's based on one specific place, but large dining chains with generic food and "quirky" "fun" practices (think T.G.I. Fridays and the pieces of flair, Joe's Crab Shack and making the staff line dance) that rob the staff and customers of their dignity.

Also shades of novelty restaurants like Casa Bonita and Magic Time Machine.

A couple of strips later.

- TODD! PLEASE DO NOT PLAY TWO DIFFERENT SONGS ON TWO DIFFERENT STEREOS AT THE SAME TIME!

- S–S–SCREW YOU! I ONLY LISTEN TO DOUBLE MUSIC!

:allears:

That said, the other day I read the last Achewood strips (i.e. everything from the Achewood High arc on :shobon:) and was cruelly reminded that Onstad just started running on empty at some point. His trying too hard to come up with Achewoodian dialogue was especially sad to watch. :(

Yeah, every time I see that strip, I think of a specific place in St. Joseph, Missouri. I don't remember its name, but it wanted to give you half-gallon margaritas and the entire place looked like the decorating budget was 80,000 Skee-Ball prize tickets.

I just recently learned that Onstad wrote the cookbook after finding the French Laundry Cookbook useless. I looked it up and good grief, the first recipe is salmon tartare in little cones that a zillion people have been reduced to tears trying to make.
