The BBC didn't have many good games. Lack of memory (32K was impressive in 1982, laughable by 1984. And the way the display worked meant you might only actually have 12K available for your game code) meant it was ignored by all the major publishers. So it didn't get any of the big releases of the time and instead BBC owners were mostly stuck playing slightly shoddy knock-offs of old arcade games, and loads of text adventures.

So I was at a General Geekery convention (lotsa board games, lotsa video games, plenty of anime tat for sale, they had a pretty sweet pinball room this year... fun times) and one of the stalls was selling mostly japanese import video games and CDs... but there was one thing they successfully talked me into buying. No video cable, but those woodgrain boxes are full of cartridges and the entire thing was $40. I'll show off more when I'm over con exhaustion.

Nice. I have one of those and a CC-40 in a box with a whole bunch of financial program cartridges. My grandfather bought them to do banking work in the 80s.

Nice! There's something wrong with mine, when I got it years ago I tried booting it up and I think something's up with the composite video port, it was outputting nothing / garbage.

I'll try and get some pictures here. I came up with a TI-99 with several cart games with the box. Has a MyArc MPES/50 with it. Only came up with 2 websites with any information on it, and one called it "an incredibly uncommon item." There have been pretty much ZERO ebay auctions with this thing. Also have a modem coupler for it, where you put a phone handset on top.

Holy poo poo, I just bought a cheap consumer printer for the first time in ages and even before opening the box I had a USB A to B cable ready. Nope they FINALLY include it! Remember the days when they wouldn't be included?

Remember the days when they wouldn't be included? I I bought a $100 laserjet back in '10 and it had a USB cable in it, I think. Why'd they pack them separately anyway? Was it just a way for peripheral companies to take a cut? God, monster cables were/are such bullshit.

I bought a Dell 830C at goodwill for $25 like five years ago and it's awesome. It said it had an empty/depleted black toner cartridge so I bought a new one. Five years and like a thousand pages later that "empty" toner cartridge is still going strong.

Printers are such terrible pieces of poo poo. I have a color laser, a b&w laser, and an inkjet and there have been situations where all three have refused to print at the same time. It’s the one technology that hasn’t gotten more reliable over the years. Although I am still amazed when I can print from my phone or tablet. That feels like magic.

I have worked with all kinds of printers from cheap consumer grade poo poo to hilariously expensive Direct to Garment printers and they are all garbage. Its just seems impossible to build a printer that works fast and reliable. The best printers i've used are super simple B/W laser printers. And even with those i just installed one that just would not loving work unless i install the drivers from the weird virtual CD drive it emulates the moment you plug it into the pc. gently caress printers.

So long as you weren't terrified of the enigmatic PC LOAD LETTER, HP Laserjets were always pretty solid. And you could run a little program to make it display whatever you wanted on that screen.

I grew up with an Apple Laser Printer we got at an auction. That thing was solid, then again we were also using Macs at the time, so that probably helped with them always working.

I swear every printer has hidden code that knows when something is due and without fail finds some way to stop working. Best I had was one that decided to ignore the local network despite printing fine a moment ago. Then after failing to get it back up I lug it across the office to hook up directly via USB. Still no dice. Had to get reception to print the documents off their machine.

Some of those LaserWriters were absolute beasts that would just go forever, especially the 810, as long as you replaced a plastic gear every so often as it liked to melt. One time I had to call HP about an issue on a Laserjet 4500 and had the best tech support experience in my life when they kept apologizing profusely for making me wait 5 minutes. That was the moment they won my brand loyalty and I really haven't been let down since, to be honest.

My favorite printer was a Panasonic KX-6500. I got it used for dirt cheap and it was rock solid until they stopped support for new versions of Windows. I bring it up because it’s obsolete and it looked awesome.

I should have said it in my last post but the universal call for anyone in IT or required to install printers is: "gently caress Printers" EDIT: The big rear end company I work for seems to have a mysterious issue with network printers - the printers seem to lose their IP randomly and it's always when it's 'important'. We are talking from C level down to invoice printers at a sales desk. Solution so far? Put al call over the interanl PA "SAVE YOUR WORK NOW WE ARE PRINTER REBOOTING THE SERVER". Yes all of our software relies on the server. This message brought to you by a company where a managers email accounts will respond to each other with the 'I am away from the office please direct all email to x addres" - I have a screenshot of the flood somewhere on a phone. On USB, I remember a time when USB was first being touted as the next best thing. An anecdote I read multiple times was 'no more driver discs, no configuring, the device tells the computer what it is and how it works' - such a simpler time haha. Yeah, the only reason we dropped it was because we switched to PCs, and in 1997 it was easier to just buy an ink jet.

Hahaha gently caress. Reminds me of this one dude who accidentally emailed the entire US Army org box in the "to" field. Cue literally thousands of replies, cries for unsubscription, inflated egos clashing over information assurance, etc. The entire Army had their inboxes destroyed but this dumb idiots email.
