Having only watched his youtube videos I watched Beagle's stream the last couple of days and noticed a couple of things

1) He seems to play far more cautiously then the game is designed for, but I guess that's part of playing on Legendary. He seems to instinctively want to overwatch crawl so I can understand why he detests the timers. I lol'd IRL when his instinct when faced with a lost swarm was to try and box strat in a nearby building.

2) He looks like a bearded sectoid and is a massive gun nut and it is very endearing how he treats his soldiers like real people and screams at them in tense situations

Re (1), XCOM 2 added the timers because people were insisting on using the turtling strats and then complained that their boring tactics made the game boring. They also added specifically anti-Beaglerush code where if aliens wander into view on their turn they sometimes don't run and just take a potshot at anyone they've flanked so you can't leave everyone in the open on overwatch.

I never really understood the advantage of leaving them out in the open rather than putting them in cover for an ambush aside from convenience anyway.

The idea was to let them wander into you on their turn rather than activate them on yours. Leaving someone in the open makes it a lot easier for them to wander into seeing your soldier. Before they added the anti-beaglerush code, they were guaranteed to take their scramble-for-cover activation move, and use up their turn on that, allowing you to setup an easy overwatch trap, and then immediately get another full turn.

The anti-beaglerush code causes them to have a chance of just shooting the guy standing with his rear end hanging out instead, punishing you for trying to be a dickweed to the AI.

If aliens walk into overwatch, you get to take the overwatch shots and have another turn afterwards. Its because the alien's turn was spent running. Instead, the changed AI will have aliens take a shot at open soldiers instead of running because of this tactic.

All it really did was make Gatecrasher harder. You can still park everyone out of vision range, scout with a Reaper, and Squadsight Overwatch (or, better yet, Killzone) to activate on the enemy turn. Usually they run forward since everyone's out of sight, you get a hail of Overwatches anyway, then a turn to mop up.

I don't know why they fixed it.

It really is a lovely hat

The other benefit was controlling what portion of the map was in LOS of you and thus valid for activating pods - if you take cover you often are forced to reveal more map as it's pretty rare to have acceptable cover tightly bunched together. If you're only revealing 60 squares instead of 130, it's much more likely that you get single pack pulls.

Having not encountered yet though his fights with the Warlock seem like babytown frolics compared to the Assassin. Especially the five turn overwatch standoff.

I actually came here to ask about that. My previous (vanilla) game, I was using them in the Proving Grounds 24/7, and I still had 16 left at the end of the game that I literally had no time to use. This time, I'm at plasma weapons and have found four. Which of these, if not both, is abnormal?

Just so everyone knows, when Tygan says breakthroughs/inspirations need to be researched immediately or the chance is lost, if you have any instant-speed research you can do those first and then take the breakthrough, the game doesn't care as long as you don't leave the menu it looks like.

So are any of these Breakthroughs that give the small bonuses worth researching before you've gone through the main tech tree? I feel like they're mostly traps to distract you from the more important stuff.

Of course part of my problem was that the game waited three months to reward me with a second scientist.

You'll get a ring mission to save them.
If you have a reaper, it becomes essentially a risk free mission since all they have to do is claymore the door open and fly out. No detection mission.

Look its pretty dumb that a bunch of random civs holed up in the middle of nowhere are better shots than my trained soldiers. Last retaliation mission I did they basically completed it without me having to do anything. Only 1 civ on the entire map died.

I thought I was really behind on everything but I'm actually only three months in, have mag weapons and just got psionics, and it occurred to me I've done so much more in three months than like five or six in the base game. So much more in the early game that I have to build a dozen things with alloys and crystals and there's only been one raid, so I don't have any more. And I'm low on intel because I bought an engineer.

This is pretty much what Long War always wanted to be.
