Spite posted:Here's my basketball hot take: Marc is currently better than Pau ever was. He doesn't have as many moves on offense but his defense is so, so much better than his brother. Prime Pau was from before my time as a watcher of more than the home team. But from what I've read, prime Pau was as good on offense as prime Marc on defense. Without good defensive numbers from back then I would err on the side of saying they've been about equally good, with Pau maybe edging out Marc careerwise because he's been such a good offensive player for so long.

Spacebump posted:It's hard for me to believe Marc is better than Pau. People forget how amazing Pau was in his prime. He has seasons with more winshares than Marc ever did in both Memphis and LA. Pau has the problem of playing during the golden age of power forwards. This causes people to underrate him. There is no shame in being worse than Dirk, Duncan, and KG. Top 50 for sure. He's already at #32 in career win shares. Could get as high as 25 before he retires if he has three more solid seasons.

He basically always anchored top-5 defenses except when injured or traded. Teams for better defensively when he arrived and worse when he left. I watched him on the Grizzles a little and on the Lakers a lot. He could guard you outside and in, and was really good at rotating over to little guards. He wasn't super speedy, but he had great balance and a really quick first step. He was a really good defensively, while both him and Marc have been great, prime Pau probably was more valuable.

Pretty much. Marc is quite good on offense, but in a more limited manner; i.e. Pau in his prime was a lot more likely to score 30-40 pts in a game than Marc would be. I'd take Pau by a small but solid margin, unless Marc can hold off injuries+age and put together a great 4-5 years. People forget that Pau has been remarkably consistent in doing his thing for 16 years.

His defense has always been underrated. Healthy Pau was a good shot blocker who had great awareness and spacing, was physical on D in the paint, had good defensive hands, rotated and communicated well. His peak D was never as dominant as Marc's peak but it was very good. Redgrendel2001 fucked around with this message at 23:53 on Sep 3, 2017 |

Pau has been so good for so long, I think it's easy to take him for granted. I mean he arrived on the NBA scene as a rookie who averaged a smooth 18 & 9 at age 21. His worst PER in sixteen seasons is 17 (rounding up here). I never thought Marc would reach Pau heights, but he's getting really darn close.

What's cool about the Gasols is that they were both considered to be close to the pinnacle of what it meant to be a skilled big men during their respective (and pretty different) eras. While people these last few years talk about Marc as the ideal stretch 5, Pau during his run was also considered to be the perfect big man for his era. He had such great touch, could pass, and was really quick on his feet. The Gasols own and I will miss them both one day.

Pau would be an amazing positionless big if he was coming into his prime right now. He'd look like a 7 foot Draymond if teams schemed like they do now, though he never had Draymond's motor. I'd like to remind people that during this guys prime the word most people used to describe him was "soft".

euphronius posted:Marc hitting 3s at 39% last year made it s lot closer . His leap in 3pt attempt rate was almost exactly nullified by his career low ftr and drop in 2pt efficiency in terms of ts% and net points vs his prior output (ignoring his injured 2015-16 season). And Pau shot even better from 3 last year, 64 3np to 44 for Marc. Marc has never been as good as 2007-2012 Pau and he's now in his age 33 season and playing notably worse than he was a few years ago. I think it's weird everyone is talking about him like he's peaking right now, which neither the numbers nor watching the Grizzlies support at all
