I always loved the look of terror on people's faces when we would be transferring diesel fuel from our boat to a barge and the guy holding the nozzle in the tank would be smoking. It was even better when you had to check how full the tank was, cause the only way to tell was to look into the top with a flash light. Again, all while smoking a cigarette. Gotta love Alaska.

The prevalence of forced pay at the pump or pay inside before pumping pretty much guarantees the employees are not going to watch the pumps at all.

My favorite dashcam vids are the ones where the camera car driver has enough time to read War and Peace between the moment poo poo starts going sideways in front of them and the moment of impact and they don't do anything. In other words: wayfinder posted:Let's never slow down!!

Still, in like 99% of dashcam videos including an accident involving the cammer, there always seem to be a few pretty obvious warning signs that the cammer misses.

Today I handled a total loss for a customer who had an eleven goddamned dollar per diem on his car. He owed about 150% again over what we valued the car at. He's basically buying his bank a reasonably priced take out dinner everyday. Somehow the bank gave him Gap coverage. I have half an inkling that he totaled the car on purpose to get out of the loan- and if he did more power to him. These are the banks you share the road with. When an insurance company is handling a car that's been declared a total loss and there's a loan on the car we ask the bank for something called a 10-day payoff. The 10-day payoff is basically freezing interest rates for those 10 days to give the driver a grace period. That way they can settle the value of the car and pay off the loan, or whatever part of the loan the value of the car can settle. After those 10 days the per day interest rate kicks back in. This loan was adding $11 to itself A DAY. Gap coverage is offered by banks and financing companies. It basically protects you from the additional amount you owe on the car after a car's been totaled. This guy had that coverage, which stopped him from owing 150% of the actual value of the car to the bank -AFTER the total loss was settled- at that interest rate. It's hard to express exactly how hosed this guy almost was.

How large was the loan amount/percent and what kind of car was this? The way you describe it, it sounds like this guy bought a Bentley with an insane interest rate to result in $11 a day, am I understanding that right? It must've been a combination of an expensive car and close-to-usurious rate. Your first post was baffling until the second to explain it lol.

It's simply how much it'll take to payoff the car in 10 days, enough time for the payment to be received. Usually there is a small kickback on the difference between the payment and what's actually owed when it's processed.

Had some dude in an Explorer weaving in and out of his lane. I'm passing him because he is doing under the limit, and honk when he starts moving towards me. His response is to jerk the wheel like he was gonna pit me, then slow way down and follow me until I pull off to do my errands. Probably thinks I'm a right rear end in a top hat, too. If I have to evacuate for Irma that'll be fun, too.

Actually, I heard from more than a few people that during this, florida drivers were loving exemplary in the last day or two before the storm. They slowed down to give room for wrecks, but didn't slow below 30 to rubberneck, made room for people changing lanes and had a lack of people swerving in and out trying to dart from open spot to open spot in some vain hope of getting out faster. Even people who stayed said that people on the roads who were out immediately before and after the storm were incredibly courteous and polite drivers. They were severely creeped out. I expect that to snap as they all try to get back.

Funnily enough... Everything was on point up to and right after the storm. People were, more or less, using stoplights that were out as 4-way stops and all that good stuff. Then I get up today, pull up to a light that was out, stop, and get passed by a BMW who never even slows down and honks at the guy who's turn it was. Back to normal!

I wonder if that's the same phenomenon that occurs on the first day of snow. Accident rates are actually down for a bit in the first day or two, as people drive more cautiously, slower etc.

Lotta bad decisions going on there. Just flip the guy the bird and get on with your day.
