There needs to be a bunch of people pushing for something further to the left so the Democrats are forced to continue moving leftward to compromise. Of course, we shouldn't oppose the fact that candidates are supporting stuff like the $15/hr minimum wage, but it's still good to aim higher. A big thing that comes to mind that isn't currently a big part of political discourse is just improving the money people receive from things like unemployment or whatever the welfare is called that people receive when they have children. It's not adequate to only focus on people who are employed.

The people and the representatives still focus too much on a bill title rather than substance. Single payer healthcare and free childcare were discussed. Those would help regardless of employment status. Paid family leave would also help working families with kids.

Oh, and some people are floating UBI in the US. That could help unemployed families without losing many people to crab mentality. What sort of programs were you thinking about for the unemployed? E: you mentioned unemployment or similar for folks with dependents One issue I hear is that it can be hard to prove eligibility, and there may be duration restrictions. And it doesn't scale with income, so if you get some low paying/part time work it could make you ineligible, even if that income is less than the unemployment payment. It seems like many states structure unemployment in bad ways. I did not do any research into this myself, so I dunno. Corky Romanovsky has issued a correction as of 07:21 on Sep 5, 2017 |

Corky Romanovsky posted:Oh, and some people are floating UBI in the US. That could help unemployed families without losing many people to crab mentality. What concerns me about UBI is that it's difficult to tell what sort of UBI people are talking about if they're not explicit. Like, it's entirely possible some people are referring to a sub-living wage UBI and would gut social services in exchange. Regarding specific programs, I don't really know. But even stuff as simple as "give people more money than you're currently giving them" is good. Extend the time people can receive unemployment (I imagine there's no reason not to just make it indefinite) and pay them more. Or some sort of UBI could also accomplish that goal. Yet another thing that comes to mind that's often missing from discourse is the idea of dramatically increasing effective tax rates on the wealthy. People talk about "making the wealthy pay their fair share" and making small increases (like Hillary's 5% or whatever), but people need to be discussing more dramatically jacking up their taxes and possibly adding a wealth tax as well. Unwillingness to drastically increase taxes on the wealthy is one of the Democrats'/liberals' most indefensible positions, because there's literally no way to defend it without resorting to what is effectively trickle-down economics. Like, they can make excuses about the cost and difficulty of implementation for stuff like UHC, but there's no reasonable excuse for not just increasing taxation on the wealthy.

Open to them your hand to the shore, watch them walk into the sea. Press upon them all they need, see them yearn for all they want. Gift to them the calm pool of words, watch them drove the sword. Bless upon them the satiation of peace, see them starve from war. Grant them darkness and they will lust for light. Deliver to them death and hear them beg for life. Beget life and they will murder your kin. Be as they are and they will see you different. Show wisdom and you are a fool The shore gives way to the sea And the sea, my friend, Does not dream of you.
