Pakled posted:I could have sworn I read in the introduction of a Foxtrot collection from the early 90's that the lead-in time for their strips was two weeks for dailies and six weeks for Sunday strips. Most anthologies from that time go into it. Scott Adams was usually 3-4 months ahead. Bill Watterson's Tenth Anniversary collection is really interesting,.He did all the color for his own strip. Scott Adams complained about how the colorist picked the worst time to add color to the cast. Waterson's book is definitely worth reading if you like a lot of newspaper comic history. Scott not so much.

This one takes on a whole new meaning with the later revelations. If you look at the background in this one the daughter in law is the only one actually looking at Kelly walking around with the prostitute. Shangri-Law School posted:How does one do that? I like how it was there the whole time, but it wasn't obvious to Kelly and the readers until the son finally spells it out during the camp out: Kelly because he's too self absorbed with his own misery to read between the lines, and the readers just taking a perpetually annoyed daughter-in-law for granted in a Kelly-toon and also focusing their attention on Kelly's antics as well.

Captain_Maclaine posted:New Kelly. loquacius posted:They're at Hooters. Hooters is a fast-food chain whose main draw is young pretty waitresses in skimpy uniforms. The eyes are probably heavy makeup. Grateful Offspring is probably mad that his dad took his kids to a Hooters but is fed up enough with him by this point that it's easier to just not make a thing out of it. Note Grateful Offspring's wife angrily waiting outside. Xander77 posted:Re: eyes - They have mismatched pupils, which I believe is cartoon language for "crazy", but doesn't really make sense with the cartoon. Jurgan posted:I guess I'm going to be overruled on this one, but it doesn't work for me to have a half-reliable narrator. Either we're seeing Kelly's POV or we aren't. Johnny Walker posted:I agree. It made me pause and think about it too long and took me out of the character. It was an unusual weak detail for a Kelly and I think it's fair to say that. Space Cadet Omoly posted:Here's the thing: You can take kids to ANY restaurant and they'll be happy because they're getting fed. They're too young/hungry to realize that there grandpa is actually being pretty sleazy by insisting on taking them to Hooters as opposed to anywhere else even though it clearly made their mom very upset. It's the kind of thing you don't pick up on until you're older. I like how this cartoon suddenly makes more sense after the reveal, and the confusion the thread had as the penny begins its drop is pretty good in hindsight too.

This sucks, but he seems pretty confident about his ability to get a new gig going. And with such a vast body of work to draw from, I imagine he can put together a real slam-dunk portfolio. I wonder if Bors and him are in contact. Admittedly even when you're talented finding work as a political cartoonist is loving rough, so maybe he could post his own stuff with a patreon or something?
