I've read a couple of things that suggest the Irish were against emancipation simply because they'd be competing for the same sport on the social hierarchy if blacks were freed.

"The Iberians are believed to have been originally an African race, who thousands of years ago spread themselves through Spain over Western Europe. Their remains are found in the barrows, or burying places, in sundry parts of these countries. The skulls are of low prognathous type. They came to Ireland and mixed with the natives of the South and West, who themselves are supposed to have been of low type and descendants of savages of the Stone Age, who, in consequence of isolation from the rest of the world, had never been out-competed in the healthy struggle of life, and thus made way, according to the laws of nature, for superior races."

I mean, what are they supposed to put on those screens? Hold over The Hitman's Bodyguard for the fourth week? Increase their showings of Detroit? It isn't them getting super excited about a movie, it's them desperate for something new after a dearth of content that audiences are interested in from August.

The whole place was packed last night, you could tell by the assigned seating displays for all the auditoriums that only the rows up against the screen were empty.

I started noticing the same things at my theater a couple years ago. Bollywood et al. imports are blowin' up right now, it's pretty wild.

sucks to be right
My local theater also realized that there's a lot of Indian people living in the area so they're tapping that market pretty hard as well, and we're also getting a whole bunch of films directly out of China for the same reason. They're also having screenings of older US films like Avatar and T2 fairly frequently and had a Japanese film festival recently.

I guess they can't rely on Hollywood dictating the market any longer (or at least couldn't rely on audiences to actually turn up to a cinema to see the latest blockbuster film instead of pirating it) and were forced to become more flexible.

Edit: I just remembered that the cinema also runs ads for local Indian restaurants before their general movies and even has some ads in Indian and not English on occasion.
It's not a small independent cinema either, it's a big multiplex which is part of one of the biggest chains in the country.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Doesn't sound like too crazy an idea, it's the multiplexes and chains that have the most flexibility and screens, they don't have to sacrifice the latest blockbusters to also cater to film buffs and local interests. If anything, it'd be the smaller cinemas taking the most risks in screening more niche films.

I was involved with some people in entertainment who did say Hollywood and Bollywood were sort of feeling each other out for a merging of sorts about a year ago industry wise. It's nice to see recognition for more global cinema and having access to it.

Old Town Road to EGOT

I remember one time (I think it was last year), I went to a local AMC theater to see something completely different, but there was this Bollywood movie premiering that night and there were literally hundreds, maybe even a couple thousand Indian people there for that.

It was rad but also kinda baffling because I had no idea we had that kind of Indian population here. There's a few great Indian restaurants here but I didn't know the number was that high. I'd never seen so many Indian people in one place before, especially not here. They definitely made every other race there a minority that night. It was a surprisingly neat eye-opener.
