Their turbo has sold out several times, as did their intercooler. The demand is there.

Repair question: 2007 MS3, ~81k miles I'm about 90% sure the VVT actuator is going out/dead (it's making that characteristic rattle on cold starts). Looking around online, apparently the repair requires special tools. Spoke to the dealership and they want $1700 for the repair (which seems high, according to the quotes I've seen other people get). Of course, I can call around to other dealerships for quotes and try to drive it down - that's not a problem. But does anyone here have an idea of how important those special tools are? Can I trust a regular shop to get it done, or is this really a dealership only repair? Anyone have this issue before?

A few more details about Skyactiv-X and the refreshed 3 platform that it'll go in for 2019: http://jalopnik.com/mazda-s-holy-grail-of-gasoline-engines-is-completely-1801820285 I thought Mazda had made a pact with a warlock or something but it turns out this is what they're doing: quote:What Mazda has done to solve these problems is devise a system called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition, SPCCI, a strategy in which a spark plug creates a “fire ball,” which acts to compress the homogeneous mixture of air/inert EGR gases and fuel to incite compression ignition. Same guy got to drive around some 3's with the Skyactiv-X version of the 2.0L with auto and manual. Sounds like there's a few kinks to work out but during the 45 minute test drives over 90% of the drive time was spent with the engines operating in SPCCI mode. http://jalopnik.com/i-drove-mazda-s-holy-grail-of-gasoline-engines-and-it-w-1800874806 Seems promising? tldr: Skyactiv-X is cool and good and Mazda is spending a lot of time thinking about your butt.

Question: I think I mentioned earlier that I bought this fire extinguisher mount to put in my MS3. It's designed to mount to the seat rails, but with the way the seat bracket and seat are designed, you wouldn't be able to adjust the seat once you install the bracket. Anyway, I'm going to use the other mounting method of bolting it through the bolts that mount the seat to the floor. To do that I need to get two slightly longer bolts for the front two seat rail mounting points, on top of that i need a narrower bolt head-- so something like an allen or torx head. Can anyone point me to a parts fiche or off the top of their head confirm the thread pattern and length of the seat rail bolts? I believe they are M10 x 1.25 (not sure on the length), but I'd like to confirm that before I go ordering something.

If the shop has ever timed any Mazda or Ford 2.3 MZR or Duratec engine in the past decade and a half they should have the kit.

That would make sense given that apparently the timing chain has to come off. I'll make a few more calls and see what I can find out with some of the independent shops.

If the 2.0 Skyactiv-X really gets the MPG of the 1.5 -D with the power of the 2.5 -G that'd be a pretty significant accomplishment. Sounds like it drives nice, if a little unremarkable. I've been planning on getting a 2017+ CX5 and want to give the diesel a shot before I buy one, but it doesn't seem like this is going to be a big enough deal to make me want to wait for it to come out. Still waiting for that Skyactiv-R, though.

Many reported it's an HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) engine, which it's really not since the spark is still starting combustion. I knew it was going to have spark plugs but initially reports said that it would use those for the 10% operating modes they couldn't use HCCI. That's why they're calling it SPCCI instead of HCCI. Either way, it's good for the industry pushing something out like this. I just hope it actually works.

So I'm buying a 2013 CX-5 touring edition with 36k miles on it from a friend. I was looking into how to fix an issue with bluetooth connection from my phone when I get in the car (more often than not it has a connection issue and if I turn the audio off/on again it fixes itself immediately). I'm hoping it's just a firmware update to the infotainment system. In looking into updating the infotainment system I found that it looks like quite a few people have hacked the infotainment system to run tweaked versions. Does anyone have experience with doing this? is it a terrible idea I should avoid attempting?

There are two categories to infotainment software mods: A) light configuration editing to reorder menu items, disable nags, and allow waypoint entry at speed B) Installing hacked Android Auto. Option A is stupid easy and basically foolproof. All you need is a USB Ethernet adapter, and there are scripts that automate doing and undoing everything. Option B is a recipe for disaster, and bricking your CMU is a very real possibility.

Well, Midland, TX and its legendary lovely drivers finally caught up with me today, but I actually got pretty lucky in the scheme of things. The other guy walked in spite of being at full fault and having neither license nor insurance. Waiting for the adjuster to come out in a couple of days and figure out what's going to happen. Hoping the headache will be minimal. Can post a shot or two if anyone wants to see (don't think there's any reason not to with the claim still open). Left rear corner is pretty well crushed but largely fixable, I think.

It's just a touch screen. Is that named something else? Tire seems untouched and my exhaust is about 1/4" off the tire. Finding a shop out here to take the work may be the worst part. Don't expect it'll be totaled but adjuster comes out tomorrow.

Is the head on the factory bolt marked at all? There's only a handful of bolt grades and I doubt Mazda used something crazy exotic, it's probably an 8.8 or 10.9.
