Kinda sucks because there is no reason in the world why the error condition has to be reported as a code that can only be read by a tool and looked up in a mechanic's reference, rather than, you know, "P0171 - vacuum leak on bank 1" on the nifty LCD cluster all cars have nowadays Well, no technical reason anyway.

Places like autozone will use theirs for you for free even. If you live in a state where your vehicle has to be inspected, having a check engine light on will fail your inspection. So in places like New York, you HAVE to fix whatever problem is causing the check engine light, or you can't legally drive your vehicle.

It used to be Ford had one connector, Honda another, bmw a third etc. Anything pre 96 give or take and you wind up with scan tools for one make and a small range of years.

Check your manual, there's usually a distinction between "something's funky" and "turn off engine RIGHT loving NOW!". The first can be all sorts of minor crap like strange sensor readings. I had a CEL in my miata because the speed sensor had a bad connection and dropped out occasionally. Simply re-seating it fixed it.

The marriage equality going on in Australia right now is very much not a Good Thing since it features such rigorously intellectual anti-same sex marriage arguments as "Children might see a picture of gays kissing", "What if a school boy wants to wear a dress?" and "If gays can get married, if I say I'm married people might think I'm a gay?"
