They have embraced a laissez-faire attitude and have the idea that if you don't like it, don't buy it or play it. Almost every single person I've ever complained about the loving landfill that is Steam these days gives the same excuse. The problem is that Steam is like a great store that often has great things and awesome deals that decided to let anyone come in and also sell stuff. In theory, you could get some really neat and unique gems that someone was previously selling out of their garage so you never knew about it. But the reality is that you have a bunch of homemade sex toys, barely legal ripoffs, and other downright made-with-toxic-chemicals poo poo that the cool garage guy is buried under all their poisonous dildos. "Don't like it don't play it," doesn't really work here.

That's the problem. The don't like it don't buy it argument can't really be beaten. It's technically correct, vote with your wallet and such. But it can only go so far defending such low quality and questionable content. It's kind of like the old rear end beaded curtain at a video store. You know what's back there and you know whether or not you're interested. It's not surfaced hardly at all (barring last week's Humble Bundle with a dozen anime porn games) but neither are the actual unappreciated grems that are released alongside the deluge of low quality garbage. Truth be told, as much as I hate them and think they're garbage, the porn games are a niche and sell. A lot are incredibly low quality, but they're honest in their own right. My biggest complaint are the things lowering the marketplace bar. Asset flips, games asking for money off the books for achievements, the ten thousand achievement games, all the poo poo that actually is questionable and should be moderated against as scams literally have no consequence to taking advantage of and further breaking the system.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Tales of Maj'eyal and that's only 1600 and I believe it was done out of spit by the dev.

I always thought tome was just laziness; just copied all the achievements he already had and whoops it turns out that a large but not unreasonable 200 achievements times 2 permadeath options times four difficulty levels is 1600.

It got so bad that Valve actually called those games "game-shaped objects" in an official statement which I find hilarious. They're basically games existing only to serve the meta-layer of playing a game - achievements, Steam cards, smilies and cutting out the useless middleman - you know, the actual game part. We're living in some weird times.

Wamdoodle posted:well, tbh I didn't bother doing any type of research into this. Yeah, there's even a game (or as Palpek pointed out, 'game-shaped object') called Achievement Hunter. Honestly, I don't mind porn games being sold on Steam, anime-themed or otherwise. If someone wants to put in the effort for their porn, then by all means, do so, and as long as there's as much hard work out into the game as there is put into playing it, then no prob. We are all grownups here after all. But stuff like Achievement Hunter, Fidget Spinner Simulation and the like only serve to clog up the Steam marketplace and shove otherwise deserving games off the front page. Is there some way I can report these things to Valve?

# ? Sep 18, 2017 13:13 |
I can believe the developers of a game-shaped object get lots of enjoyment out of any money they generate and that that's reason enough for them to be made in spades. I can't believe anybody enjoys them for their own sakes though.

The ones who buy them presumably do... or is there some secondary use for steam achiements that I'm missing that would make this exploitable?
