IT seems pretty unique compared to other stuff, but I spent a few months unemployed after finishing my degree, then got hired at a relatively low salary, now my pay is back where it was as an O-3. Supposedly I've got a better paying job waiting for me once it winds its way through the approval process to even be listed. These hurricanes are slowing things down significantly.

Looks like I'm getting a post-Korea follow on to Peterson. For the first time in my career, I'm going to try to be proactive about where I live, rather than figuring it out after I get there. Anybody ever live in Colorado Springs? Neighborhood recommendations? I assume I'll buy a house, but that's by no means a sure thing.

Not that the Air Guard is that bad, but every once in a while I have days where I'm glad I joined. Like today. A few of us got to swing by a gunnery range where SFS was qualifying on their heavier weapons. They had extra ammo, so we got to shoot the M2, 240B, and the 203. At one point, they left me and another Lt unsupervised with two 203's, about a hundred practice rounds, a wide open range, and instructions to "Not do what other CATM guys do and shoot straight up and see if you can dodge the falling round, but have fun." We probably fired 20 rounds trying to get the shots to hit each other in mid-air. It felt like I was loving around at a driving range with a bucket of balls. Our fighter pilot Vice Wing CC even stopped by to fire off a few rounds, and then spent 20 minutes on his hands and knees in the dirt helping pick up brass. I wasn't expecting that. Sidenote: drill weekends have become so much better since I commissioned. A few months ago I got to ride around in an Abrams on the airfield with a tank crew who had permission from the Wing CC to tear up the grass and have some fun.

It's South of Peterson (and technically closer to Fort Carson) but it's a great low key area. If you want a view of the mountains I would avoid the East side of town (anything East of Powers). With legalized weed the housing market is loving nuts and houses (and apartments) are crazy expensive. Depending on what kind of area you are looking for there is an area for you.

The last written assignment at my NCO Academy involves writing a plan for self-improvement for the next few years. The usual management buzzword stuff. Throughout the paper, I've been very consistent in referring to the plan as my Five Year Plan, and calling the document itself my manifesto. I really hope it raises an eyebrow or two.

I just commissioned last year, and most drill weekends involve me doing whatever I feel like under the guise of "getting to know the squadron". That'll probably change when I get some responsibility, but for now, drill is way better than it was when I was enlisted.

[/quote] Hey man I'll try to remember to get back to you on this tomorrow when my brain is working better. My first and only assignment was Pete and I've been here since I got out. I've been in the springs about 9 years. The town is a huge loving disgusting sprawl so you've got a million options depending on what you want. I will say every renter knows what BAH is and the home market is kinda blowin up because Carson is gonna explode in size since TRUMP! I got my house in 2014 and it's gone up like 50k without doing anything because I live in the middle of town.

Denver is so short on houses people are actually choosing to move to Colorado Springs and commute to places with an economy and not just retiring from the military or getting stuck there.

It's been seven years since I've been there. It's a bummer that you think the east side has gone to poo poo. I generally stayed around the houses in that area. The west side of 25 was nice for the view and the chances of seeing someone military is smaller, but I would hate the commute. I was at Schriever so it was a 30 minute drive for me and I was already on the east side. I can't imagine the commute living west of 25 and driving all the way out to Schriever. A friend of mine lives in Castle Rock and drives to Schriever, and his commute is an hour. I wouldn't want to leave my house at 630 and get home at 530, but I suppose your days off would be nice.

I doubt much of anything has changed since you lived there, other than the Powers corridor filling out. The East side is like living in a Kansas suburb. All flat and full of cookie cutter shitboxes. And it has the same creeping grossness that any part of CS with a high # of rentals and milfolk experiences. It'll be just like everything that touches Academy sooner than later.

Anyone have experience with being force retrained? I was going to reenlist but with the specter of being retrained into something lovely that I can't get out of I kind of don't want to risk it. Also in regards to reenlisting, will afpc give me an assignment before I reenlist and tell me to get availability or will they just say this person is coming up on their end of enlistment and they don't need one?

I have no experience with retraining, but I can speak to retainability. I've had orders drop when I was less than a year from separating, multiple times. Generally speaking you have 15 days (I think, don't quote me on the timeline) to either reenlist or complete an AF Form 1411, Extension of Enlistment in the Air Force. You may also need to complete a leave settlement form. The type of PCS assignment will determine the number of months you would need to extend for. CONUS assignments (with some exceptions) require at least 12 months on your contract after you PCS. Overseas tours require the full length of the tour (1, 2, 3, or 4 years).

They let me push my PT test to next month, which I thought would be cool because I just spent a week drinking at my sister-in-law's for her wedding, and my test was supposed to be in two days. We've never had to drop down to two shifts for any alert I've ever been on, so it's pretty out-of-the-ordinary. This squadron is a garbage fire though, so I shouldn't be surprised.
