The 200 USD price difference between the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL is actually pretty significant considering many of the internals are the same. The extra money basically gets you a bigger display, smaller bezels and ???. I guess it's possible the camera will see a big upgrade for the XL?

So how can it justify increasing the price 20%? If they want to grow market share and have a successful phone this won’t help. It’s not like they have a special-sauce SoC that’s competitive with apple, they use off the shelf snapdragons like everyone else. Also, all the components in a phone cost under $300 total, there is no way swapping out one component like a camera can justify any material price change.

Samsung made the Note 8 which is 99% identical to the S8+ and it costs 13% more. The Lexus ES and the Toyota Corolla are essentially the same vehicle despite a $10k difference in price for similarly equipped models. GM in the 80s would sell the exact same car across multiple brands at multiple price points with literally no differences at all except the grilles & taillamps. This is just how the world works. As for the flagship phones, you can buy them or not, Google doesn't care. Google wins if you buy any Android phone. If you want to buy it from them, that's great, but if not they only care about your data so as long as you use a phone with the Play Store, they got what they came for. Why would they give the slightest gently caress about market share?

Wipe, start fresh, watch the user rush to install as many items of malware/spyware as possible. Car salesman should be using this tactic to sell you a new car. Old car full of garbage and the gas tank is getting low? Just buy a new car!

I think it's because every app you install will try to start up a background process so that if it gets a notification it can be brought to the foreground. The problem with this is it takes up more and more memory to run these background processes and it slows down the ones in the foreground.

Your  is bad. Cars actually do lose horsepower as they age. Plus things like suspension bits getting soft and tires wearing out. They actually do get slower. I can see a phone "getting slow" as apps and the OS evolve and require more resources. Of course, being Android, most people aren't going to get an OS update, so that won't be a factor!

I will say from the day I bought my 2011 MacBook Air to the day it died in 2017, it never got slower so it is possible for things to not get worse over time without factory resetting. RIP little buddy.  Edit: I know I saw that article before I saw this dumb Lifehacker post that says nothing so that places it in early August. The Pixel 2 is exactly the same price as it was last year and got a bump in base storage along with whatever improvements come with the 2nd gen. The Pixel 2 XL is about $80 more than last year if the prices are accurate, but it comes with a more advanced design (minimal bezels). The display is probably driving the price increase there. In other news HTC has halted trading for a "pending major announcement" so I would guess a Google acquisition is about to happen.

Hey Android thread, I have a probably very stupid newbie question. I'm going to be moving jobs in the next few months and I wanna know if it's at all possible to use an android phone as a work computer these days. What I mean is, can I plug in a USB-C dock, and then a big screen, keyboard and mouse into say a google pixel, and do my worky things? I do 99% of my work in a terminal or text editor and browser, all of which my ancient work provided droid phone already supports, so I know the software is there. I've always wanted a universal computing device I can just plug into an office desk and suddenly be a full pc and I wonder if that's at all workable yet on latest devices?

If you are talking about pocket sized, no. Really not much point though as most pocket sized battery packs max out at 1-2A anyways, so you would be fine with an A-C cable. I'm not sure a pack with so few cells would be able to dump out any higher than that, no matter the interface. My suggestion for pocketability and power would be an Anker Astro E1 and a good A-C cable. It charges the Pixel fairly rapidly and is pretty cheap. For a larger battery, I can't speak enough good praise about the Mophie USB-C XXL. It's pricy, but it works exceedingly well and has features no other USB-C pack currently has. It also can't accidentally drain your phone like the Anker designs do.

Is there any way of making a long press on the fingerprint sensor on the Pixel lock my phone? The Moto G5 I upgraded from had that functionality and I still keep trying to do it because I'm an idiot who can't break habits

Connect the power supply, monitor, mouse and keyboard to the dock, plonk the phone into the dock, and you're set. Unfortunately it's only for the latest Samsung phone.

I say "might be" because I haven't really looked in to whether it will blow up your Pixel or whatever, but I've had it in a wishlist for awhile with intentions of figuring out if it will burn down your house or not.
