Boomers have Happy Days, Elvis Presely, The Beatles, so much. They pioneered nostalgia.

Edit: Happy Days being basically the That 50s Show.

I really don't want to pay the Gamestop ransom if there are going to be enough out there that I can just buy one. They've got me on the hook for a lovely package that's twice the retail cost for some book I don't care about and a wireless controller that I'd rather have an 8bitDo.

Do I cancel my preorder or not... hmmmm.

Can't you return it? Keep it all wrapped, use your SNES classic. If you find one within the return window, swap the new one out for the one in the bundle and just return it all

anecdotal, but my old man collects coins and stamps because he had a collection of both that his mom threw out when he went to university which he believes would now have been worth hundreds of thousands of dollars if only it hadn't been thrown out

then he got really into nostalgic electronics (for him) for a while so he'd troll goodwills and st. Vincent's for old betamax players or 8 track decks or Atari game consoles. at one point before his health got too bad to keep it up he had an entire storage unit he rented to just keep all his old junk in.

Nostalgia? Pfft, I just want to buy this thing, play it for 30 minutes, then never touch it again.

The question is...what's the 2-3 games you'll play for 10-15 minutes each before never touching the SNES Classic again? I'll probably get past the opening sequence of FFVI, past the opening sequence of Earthbound, and maaaaaybe, if I have time still, play a couple of levels of Yoshi's Island.

Theres a thing about the protection scheme that makes it bigger than life for a kid. It's like the world gets how important these things are that there's this whole ritual to them. It makes the act of choosing bigger.

And to adults, its a drat inconvenience while we wait for a teenager in a vest with a keyfob to come by and liberate the drat thing.

Also, Boomers loving weaponized their nostalgia, and were arguably one of the first generations to be able to easily look back at their past, thanks to the relative security they grew up in, technological advances like home films and photography, etc.

Like The Wonder Years was a thing. Veneration of Woodstock was a thing. Bathing in the triumph of the civil rights movement was a thing.

Millenials and Gen Xers are just lucky enough to live in an era where lots of the formerly disposable media and pop culture they enjoyed can be remanufactured with relative ease.

There wasn't a Super Metroid port on GBA. You're probably thinking of Zero Mission which is a remake of the first Metroid.

I do kinda have some nostalgia over that ticket system but it really would bother me if it was still there. Just buying any game physically at a store feels a little dumb and outdated today.

You should give it another try. It's my third favorite RPG after Earthbound and Chrono Trigger. The isometric graphics haven't aged that well but there's a ton of charm to it and the gameplay holds up.

Things didn't change as much during the boomers generation. They went B&W > Color TVs. Dial phones > touch tone. But they didn't have the drastic changes that our generation has seen. So less call for looking back fondly at a simpler time.

They did things like toy collecting, baseball cards, etc. They collected commemorative stuff like coins and plates too that was often based on nostalgia for themes of the past. After that, living vicariously through their kids by pushing them into sports and other things they enjoyed growing up themselves.

Restoring cars is another big one.

Also, those greaser type people who perpetually live in the 50's (slicked hair, tattoos, leather jackets, drive matte black roadsters and hot rods) and listen to rockabilly... though I assume that is probably people born a decade or two after the boomers who just appreciate that type of retro.

However, we do benefit from even higher standards of living and even the poorest of us have more money and resources at our disposal than poor people did 50+ years ago, so we have the luxury of extended adolescence that can develop in singular areas, like video games.

Also, some people are most nostalgic than others. There are tons of people in their 20's and 30's who have no nostalgia and don't touch video games, music, TV or movies from their childhood. It all depends on the person.

I think the other thing with boomers is they didn't have the notion of the value of a mass-produced children's thing going to the loving moon. It wasn't until Action Comics #1 started paying out handsomely in auctions that those sorts of products really started turning the screws onto things like collectability and limited editions.

Pre-Ocarina of Time's Gold Cart did Nintendo ever put anything out in a way where it was specifically built and marketed as a limited issue thing?

It's interesting...things that get played with and used and worn down become more collectible as there are fewer instances of a mint condition one out there in the world.

So if everyone tries to collect a thing and keep it mint, it's value will remain more static, as more remain in good condition.

I honestly wonder why TRU abandoned the Ticket System. You would think that it would be embraced because it would a) cut down on shelf space in the aisle, creating more room for other products. b) Prevent the need to have an employee come unlock a case for you. The wait could kills a sale, meanwhile you grab the ticket and wait after the sale has been made.

Edit: Service Merchandise was the same way with their weird ticket system.

Fitting enough the very Toys R Us I work at is the one my parents got the SNES near launch. They bought a Turbographix 16 with Keith Courage, but the controller broke and they exchanged it for the SNES with Mario World instead. That said, the old ticket system was pretty lame to be honest. I remember it was still there when I got Mario RPG for my birthday, but think by the time I got Suikoden II at that Toys R Us, they made the 'R-Zone".

I get to work the opening day the SNES Classics come in, so that is going to be 'fun'. Thankfully I already have one pre-ordered at Best Buy so no need to worry about getting one.
