Wow, talk about purple prose. I've got altitude sickness after reading that.

That Chelsea Wolf review made a pretty basic reviewing mistake, which was reviewing the album based on thing it's not trying to be, which seems pretty on par with a lot of A.V. Club editorials. I've been writing one metal album per week this year as a little personal writing project and I am by no means qualified but at least review the albums on their own terms! It's not hard!

Yeah it's great. There's definitely some Jarboe influence in there as well. Her previous album, Abyss, is also well worth checking out. Survive was my favourite song that year.

To be honest I've always preferred her work with Swans and the Neurosis & Jarboe album to her solo stuff, but thanks for the heads up.

I haven't had a chance to to listen to Myrath's Legacy until recently. Holy poo poo it's so good.

I loved Desert Call because it was straight Symphony X worship. I loved how Tales of the Sands saw them form their own sound blending progressive metal/power metal/ and middle eastern strings to make tremendous and powerful music.

Legacy is an even further refinement of that sound, and once again I am blown away.

I was never enjoying it. I only eat it for the nutrients.
Attic is decent, and they do the best King Diamond vocal impression, but I don't think their songwriting or guitar work stacks up against the first couple Portrait albums, which you could mistake for LaRocque/Wead if you aren't paying attention:

If you look at the picture with the clip you posted, you see Uffe, one of the early members of Entombed as well as LG Petrov, who came in slightly later in the band.
You also have Nicke Andersson, one of the most creative rock musicians in Sweden, who later changed into garage rock with the Hellacopters and who by now have probably done more in the whole rock/metal genre than basically anyone else.

Them is also a pretty cool King Diamond worship band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33OMuGfNQUs&t=9s

But really, like with Bolt Thrower worship bands, I always just end up listening to the original instead.

For a couple albums there I worried Dani Filth had lost his range in terms of what he could do with his voice, but this is stuff is as good as anything they did from the start.

I've tried some of the fancy earplugs, but I always end up going back to cheap foam ones. I either take the oversized barrels and chop them in half, or just use the shaped ones and don't push them all the way in. Rather than maximum volume reduction, I just want them to stop the ear-piercing treble that makes my ears ring and fatigue after a while.

I use these and I like them, they're comfortable and they don't look dumb. They amplify the lows and you lose some of the highs, but I rarely walk away with hosed up ears.

They're more comfy than etymotics if those aren't for you. These have interchangeable filters for more noise reduction, but I found that the red filters for higher reduction are a bit too strong for concerts, the default filters work fine.

So, I just saw Dark Tranquillity, Warbringer, and Striker. Mortals couldn't make it (probably couldn't get past the border). Striker wasn't my thing. They were super cheesy. Warbringer was amazing, and Dark Tranquillity was phenomenal. The only awful thing is t-shirts were $35 CAD a pop. However, the concert venue was a 500-600 person club, so I don't think DT was making a lot of money off the show.

DT probably makes more money out of craft beer anyways.
For some reason a lot of the Swedish death metal bands have started brewing craft beer.

Everybody is brewing their own beer now, it seems. Stone and NOFX did a lager, Deftones and Belching Beaver did an IPA, Slightly Stoopid did an IPA with some brewery I'd never heard of.
