I use a tablet as the dashboard on my race car. I'm currently using an original N7 tablet which is perfect except the screen is cracked and it can't charge while using USB OTG. Is there a cheapish USB-C tablet on the market that allows OTG and charging at the same time? It's my understanding that the -C/3.1 spec includes this, so it's not a horrible hack like it is on older tablets. I just finally ordered it earlier today when the price dropped a bit more, to about $280 shipped with a 20% coupon da8982. I don't have it yet obviously so can't comment myself but expect some tradeoffs compared to locally purchased brand name stuff of course. Still, I think it's worth it for the netbook-like form factor, wacom digitizer and Core M for a very reasonable price. There are a ton of other options if you're ok with Atom, capacitive stylus, or floppy keyboards though.

There's definitely been an explosion in options for Surface equivalents after Microsoft proved there's a market for them, though quality is always a concern when dealing with budget devices (not that Microsoft's QC track record has been stellar so far, but at least they seem to be responsive to issues if you have a Microsoft Store to make exchanges at). None of them have been particularly stand-out that I've heard, but I'll admit to not having been researching the market lately either. Let us know how well that Cube works, particularly the digitizer. The Surface 1/2 models had Wacom digitizers and there were tracking issues around the edges as I recall.

One of my better eBay deals was getting a Cube i7 Stylus for $90. Only issue was a dent in the bottom of the keyboard base. It's pretty cool, and also works as a Hackintosh (no stylus support, sadly).

This is probably asking for the impossible, but figured I see what’s out there before sucking it up for a Fire HD. I’m just looking for a basic web browser and media machine. Very light gaming but that isn’t a dealbreaker. I’d like: -1080p -8 inch screen -splitscreen multitasking (not as important, obviously) -Under $100 (doesn’t have to be new) This is probably asking way the hell too much for the price, but I’d see if anyone has heard of older models on eBay or Swappa that satisfy the above.

Apparently previous Fire tablets choked a little on games like Final Fantasy Record Keeper and Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but if this new one can run them smoothly I'll stop waiting for Lenovo to finally start selling the drat Tab 4 Pluses.

I picked up a used first gen iPad pro in SA mart for $400 and the price/performance ratio there is really really good I know the reason stuff can run so well on it is because it was specifically made for iOS but as long as that doesn't prevent you from doing what you need (no go if you want Photoshop or whatever) it's a good choice

I thought I'd pop by BestBuy and try out a couple Android tablets yesterday. Several $400+ CAD Android tablets were sputtering and dropping frames in freaking sprite games. I've heard the Android versions tend to be poorly optimized compared to their iOS counterparts but that blew my mind. Lenovo seems to be dragging their feet on the Tab 4 8" Plus, but now I'm worried anything less will struggle to run even simple mobile games like FFRK and FFBE smoothly. If not for the work angle (I get asked to help with a lot of Android tablets) I think I'd just give up and buy another iPad.

Also you gotta look at the operating systems. The Surface is going to run Windows 8.1 (not sure if it's upgradable to Windows 10) while the iPad is locked into iOS. Both have their caveats.

The Surface 3's Atom processor runs Windows 10 as well as it does 8.1, but it's not a terribly pleasant experience for anything heavier than Youtube and notetaking.

I feel like if someone is dead set on getting a Surface then go for either a Pro model or the Book. Those are premium tablets with premium prices to boot that fit, not necessarily a niche but a certain type of user. If its just media consumption then I feel a second hand iPad is the way to go. Android tabs tend to all have their own little caveats across the board.

That sucks regarding the regular Surface. Forgot to mention that I wanted to avoid the Ipad. (had an Ipad Air 2 for a while but just wasn't a fan) I mainly want something that I can browse the internet and stream without the tablet choking from time to time like my HD8 likes to do.

I haven't used the Surface 3 myself but that's basically what it was designed for, just don't expect to be able to run heavy apps like CAD software without it chugging. You may need to limit your multitasking though, I find that even my SP3 will show noticeable performance degradation if I'm typing in Discord while I have a Twitch stream going - though that may also be Discord being a fairly heavy app in terms of graphics usage and me having the stream window maximized so it needs to upscale to near 2560x1440 or whatever the native resolution was again. Stream is going smooth the whole time though.

I'd like to take a minute to pimp the almost unheard of Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus. The Tab 3 Plus was forgotten by Lenovo minutes after its birth (as is customary for any Lenovo product, they're too busy making the next thing to worry about the one from 30 seconds ago), but you should not forget about it. It's out there, it's for sale (in a few rare places), and it's loving great. Quick specs for those who aren't familiar: http://www.gsmarena.com/lenovo_yoga_tab_3_plus-8311.php Snapdragon 652 3GB RAM 10.1" 2560x1600 Front facing stereo speakers (4 of them, actually) 32GB Storage w/MicroSD 9300 MaH battery USB C The specs say it only goes up to Android 6, and officially it does, but anyone buying a Lenovo product should not be looking for official support. Unofficial support for this tablet is young but strong - there is no official forum over on XDA for this (yet) but some enterprising individuals have unlocked the bootloader, rooted (TWRP, root, unlock bootloader: https://forum.xda-developers.com/thinkpad-tablet/general/beta-twrp-root-disable-encryption-yoga-t3538017), and ported LineageOS 14.1 (Android 7.1, if you don't know - https://forum.xda-developers.com/thinkpad-tablet/development/unofficial-lineageos-14-1-lenovo-yoga-t3561457) to it. This tablet sorta sucks with the stock OS on it but it is a killer thing once you've gone all the way and customized it. The tablet is quick as poo poo, the screen is beautiful, the battery lasts forever and the weird battery spine gives you a comfortable handle to hold it with. Bluetooth under LineageOS works very well and pairs to my PS3 controller, other game controller, and various bluetooth audio devices without any issues, lag, or skipping. This one was a big deal for me as many devices have issues with bluetooth and I like to be able to game on my tablet. The built in stand works great for propping this thing up to watch video/play games. I paid $389 CAD for this from NewEgg (https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834332568 - currently out of stock), I may have overpaid but I haven't seen it anywhere else for cheaper (I think B&H stocks them, and you can buy right from Lenovo). I don't know how long these will be around but I highly recommend this if you're looking for something for media consumption in the $400 CAD ($300 USD) range. Good luck finding a case, I use a 10" iPad slip case.

I'm a trucker and it's handy just slapping the case closed and throwing the tablet behind a seat or whatever and not have to worry about the screen. I've also been really happy with the tablet. Speakers are quite loud, which is important when you have idling trucks and reefers and apus going off all around you. Screen is great, and I can make it through most of a season of a show on Netflix without recharging.

I have a hard time imagining a person who wouldn't already be heavily swayed by the mobile OS their smartphone is on when it comes to making a tablet decision, so comparing specs of an Android device vs an iOS one is really a silly exercise. It's more relevant when you're comparing devices running the same OS (maybe even the same OS revision).
