Yeah the typical modern American has much more access to foods that can mess with your teeth than the average hunter-gatherer, just by virtue of globalization, agriculture, etc. Sugar is a huge aspect. 'Cavepeople' tended to have surprisingly good teeth, but the downside was when they DID get cavities or had other tooth problems it was likely fairly debilitating. EDIT: Like now you can just get a filling and try not to get another cavity, but back then I imagine you had to just pull the tooth and hopefully you've got something to dull pain for the surgery.
