The best fighter in the tournament (Melsik) got injured and Mohan Dragon may be the worst kickboxer I have ever seen. He fights exactly like Bob Sapp and he's winning

How is that real, and how is it working?! Like, is it a case that they haven't fought someone that Bob Sapp like ever so they don't know how to defend against it? My gym would disown me if I tried that I think, and they only keep me around as someone who can speak to the police without getting in trouble as it is.

I think it's partly that it's so exceedingly rare to have a guy that unskilled at a low weight class and partly that the bracket was so lovely that the tournament got won by a tubby semi-retired Yuta Kubo who's now a full time trader. It's worth pointing out that one of the guys in the bracket did KO Mohan earlier this year in Krush though. I want to hate it because he does so clearly suck, but he's a loving 40 year old Nepalese lightweight who fights like Bob Sapp and wanted to win the tournament so he could start a curry food cart. I'd be happy to watch him accidentally stretch dudes with zero technique a few more times.

K-1 announced a mini show in December with the badass title "Survival Wars", which they typically use for title eliminators to clear the path for their big show next year. Since they were building up to Taiga Vs Takeru 3 and Taiga just got completely stomped in a bs non-title affair, there may be a Taiga/Stauros rematch for the belt and some of the usual title eliminators Also one of the on line kickboxing die hards who is the sole conduit for getting news out of China ironically suggested Mohan Dragon Vs Yi Long and a Chinese matchmaker suddenly started following him and replied "Interesting". The curry food cart dream lives. Also also, the K-1 commentary team were giving veiled callouts after the Takeru fight and Tenshin Nasukawa immediately posted "we'll see what happens" unprompted on twitter. There's a bunch of weird political bullshit he couldn't navigate to make the fight before but he's chasing that fight still

i really wish this was a followable sport without necessarily relying on this thread for any news or how to watch it, i really enjoy watching it. you all do a great job but the only time i get to watch it is when i go on trips for work and randomly some local channel in california plays local poo poo. last time there was a guy who kept cheating until he got one of the hardest leg kicks i've ever seen. he sat down, tapped, and had the exact same look on his face as that one picture of the goon sitting on the couch with vomit running down him. for like twenty minutes, too, until they got him out of the ring and the next fight immediately started

it's gonna be a sorry rear end old man fight anyway i'm not sure if i've linked this before but here is a chronology of organised crime in amsterdam up until 2015, starting from the early days when the drug kingpins hired karate guys and kickboxers to be bodyguards and assassins. almost all of the fighters mentioned have been assassinated, with the exception of dick vrij who is on a deathlist and asked to go back to prison. not work safe warning because it has pictures of dead bodies occasionally but the whole thing is a bizarre read. because it's been periodically updated for several years you get a new name introduced and then in the next paragraph how they violently died. https://amsterdamgang.wordpress.com/2011/02/05/chronology-of-the-amsterdam-gangland/

Guess who decided to dip down to do an amateur turn in a different sport?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEwIURMN9aY&t=9364s Guessing the Romanian federation really wanted the help and he had nothing else going on? I've explained the rules to sanshou in the MA thread, but basically, you get points for throws and pushing off the platform in addition to landing strikes. Ghita doesn't look super comfortable in the extended grappling, but that's academic in the face of his firepower. He's gonna crush the fat Chinese guy who won the other semi of 90+ kg.

Sanshou is different enough that even an amateur with the right (grappling-heavy) style can shut down a pro kickboxer. In a two minute round (paused whenever a throw or fall happens), you're maybe scoring 10 pts tops in clean strikes. It's 1-2 points per throw, 3 pts for pushout, and you only need 2 pushouts to win the round. Against a pro who Leko who couldn't seem to stay up on his feet, most of the kick-catch throws would work. Against someone who was used to working on the ropes, they'd not sense urgency from being at the edge of the platform. One of the interesting things about sanshou is the open scoring. You know at the end of the round who won or lost. Each of the 5 judges has clickers for red and blue corners to track points. At a top tier event like this, the clickers are digitized, so you can see total points for red and blue as the bar between the round win indicator in the upper left. After red scores two clean kicks to the body after 2:37:03, you can see the bar quickly shoot up for red. Based on watching the other fights, these judges are particularly strict about cleanness of strikes. Probably plenty of striking heavy matches scoring in the single digits on strikes.

So here's an interesting wrinkle, the guy Ghita faces in the final is fighting on the Glory China card in 2 weeks against Junior Tafa. Amongst the limited talent pool in China he's very very highly regarded.

Amongst the limited talent pool in China he's very very highly regarded. His fight is at 2:32:38 if you want to scout it. Yes, not many Chinese fighters >200lbs who aren't fat. The commentators talk his movement and speed up. He doesn't look slow, but not at Ghita levels. He could easily take this tournament if his trips/throws are up to snuff, but doesn't look like a great prospect for straight kickboxing.

I'm obsessed with this live scoring meter. The 5 judges sit around the platform, and whenever there's an iffy kick that doesn't quite land clean, you see the score shoot one way and then the other as the different judges call the strike differently. It's also nice how as the round wears on and total points shown by the meter grow, each individual winning exchange counts for less and less. Live stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62A7wHh55uk
