Like every single other box/app I've used. I love all my Apple gear and accept they usually come with at least one mind boggling feature per device, but the lack of frame rate and sdr/hdr sensing is pretty sucky.

I'm hoping after all the bad feedback they'll enable mode switching as a user option.

I think it's pretty impossible to do in a way that's graceful enough for Apple be happy with without TV manufacturers agreeing on a consistently implemented standard, or Apple making their own tv. Apple making their own tv is by far the more likely of those, and it's not even particularly likely.

Most other hardware reads the framerate of the incoming source and kicks out the signal at that frame rate and leaves it to the TV to adjust to the new one. In the same way, kicking out an HDR signal will tell the TV it needs to adjust too. Most other hardware deals with this stuff perfectly fine, and as it's not 1998 anymore the TVs deal with it without a hitch. I'm guessing Apple found trying to reverse engineer this into an existing framework wasn't as easy as hoped, and rushed it out in an 'almost works' state.

My understanding was that they didn't like the flicker that happens to most TVs when the resolution/mode changes so they figured they'd make it "seamless"

I'd much rather take that then bullshit fake HDR being applied and incorrect frame rates.

That's insane and totally believable. Also anyone who sees the flicker and gets annoyed with it blames the TV, not the individual device. If that's the case, adding the extra option shouldn't be difficult and maybe in a point revision. I'll hold off on choosing a 4K box between the new ATV, Roku Ultra, and Amazon Fire until they're all in the wild and flaws are known/addressed.

That's the problem, nothing is really perfect right now. If I were to pick an option though and didn't care about Apple integration, I'd go back to the Shield hands down.

I think what isn't graceful is the TV looking like it's at half brightness the entire time 4k HDR is selected and the content being presented isn't HDR. Or, I dunno, make it an option? Just like you have to enable the best modes (4:2:2 chroma), you could enable auto switching if you know what it does.

Exactly, an auto option for people who don't know any better/don't care, and a 'these are the modes my tv is capable of' checkboxing for us motion and colorspace nerds.

I'm having an issue with Plex on AppleTV. If i'm watching a TV show, the 30-60 seconds drops out. It will start buffering around the 90 seconds left mark for a second which will increase exponentially until about 30-60 seconds left and then the file will just stop. The file plays fine on my Roku boxes, and I can finish the episode by using VLC on my phone and airplay. Anyone else see this before?

I'll have to look later, since I pretty much use Channels for OTA stuff.

Those digital copy clearinghouses are great. I got a digital copy of Cabin in the Woods for Halloween and Nick Cage's Season of the Witch for every day viewing because it really is one of his best works. EDIT: well, until the code doesn't work because you have to insert the disc to redeem. loving A. Krispy Wafer fucked around with this message at 02:52 on Oct 5, 2017 |

Got one of the 4ks. Everytime I switch to a different input on my TV and back, HDR turns itself off. Any idea why?

Anybody who's trying to convince themselves to buy/upgrade to an ATV 4K should read this fairly detailed review: https://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1507035457 Almost every feature examined, even stuff about the HDR and connections and what you can expect to find as far as 4K media..

Are these available physically anywhere other than an Apple Store? I kind of casually want one and it'd be much easier for me to pull the trigger on it if I could just walk into Best Buy and get one, but checking online every single store near me doesn't carry any stock (although they can be ordered online).

Best Buy is stocking them. Whether they have any physically in stock is a different question.

Costco.ca has the 32GB for $219CAD plus there is or was a $25 off coupon off $100 if you use MasterCard masterpass or whatever. Seemed like a good deal

Went to my local Best Buy just looking for an optical cable and came across this. Except it wasn't a 4k it was just a regular old 4th generation. I looked at the packaging and it just said [1080p] on the back which was a red flag but also saw the picture of the remote having a white circle around it which made me think it was a new one (It was a new one, a new 4th gen). Needless to say I didn't really want one in the first place but now that I thought I could get one and didn't get one I want it even more and no one has it. RIP.

Yeah, Apple stuff is never branded as "iPhone" or "iPad" or whatever, it's always iphone 8+ or iphone ecks or iPad Pro 9.8 and such, clear markings of its version

C'mon, if you're savvy enough to specifically want the 4K Apple TV, you're not gonna not know that you got the wrong one. By the time you get to the register you're gonna realize that's it's ringing up for the wrong price.

Is Plex real wonky on AppleTV? My local server is fine, but connecting to a remote server barely works. It'll play usually around 15-30 minutes of something, then stop, say "connection isn't fast enough", then buffer for forever to play like 1 min. Seems pretty obvious the connection is fast enough since it'll play a solid half hour easily...any way to fix this?
|
# ? Oct 9, 2017 21:49 |

I've had Plex tell me the connection isn't fast enough when playing from my local server.
