TotalLossBrain posted:Claims of 'reverse-engineering' are a bit dubious , though - if a board shop noticed the similar designs/hardware layout, then it's a pretty good bet it was a copy & paste job instead. In a proper reverse-engineered board, the layout would probably not be identical. The circuits, SOCs/ICs might be similar or identical. Silk screen & layout, though? Not a chance. If Otto obtained the chip legitimately they can grind off the package and stick the thing under a microscope and go off and design copies of it and they're not guilty of a trade secret violation, which is what they're being sued for. They could conceivably be open to claims of another nature (like, the copyright), but they're in the clear in regards to trade secrets, which is what the lawsuit is about. SOmetimes they can just straight up refund the sale difference if you ask for it.

It tends to take time because it's done by whoever in the office has time to do it at the moment IIRC and not a dedicated support staff member. I've had a lot of friends complain about how much of a pain it was to deal with but every time I've dealt with it I've gotten the refund and they've been nothing but polite and quick about it as soon as they took the ticket.

I think Valve actually described your exact scenario, or someone asked them, regarding a valid refund. Anything under 2hr played/ 2 weeks owned is usually an auto approved refund.

I bought a game shortly before it went on sale in 2012, and they refunded the sale price back to me. I also bought a game in 2014 that (and this is 100% my fuckup and I never expected anything) was refunded to me because I bought the wrong game (Starforge instead of Starbound). I just asked Steam Support nicely each time and said "I totally understand that you have no obligation to help me out but I would be really grateful if you did". The joke was on me because Starbound was a feature-incomplete Terraria-in-space game when it came out and now it's a loving hot mess, and has been good for exactly zero of the time I have owned it.

The oldest "Last Played" date on my steam library is back in 2012 and I can't recall ever having issues. I'm always just polite to them and never try to abuse the refund system compared to my friends who try to get refunds every other week and lose their poo poo with steam support if there's any kind of delay.

Yeah it's pretty great. I've used it twice over the years without troubles. Both times I didn't like the game and that was a good enough reason I guess. (Universe Simulator and Stalker)
