How much of an idiot would I be considering the Sony XZ1 over the pixel 2? especially if its the international version with fingerprint sensor but no CDMA support?

For reference, I've got a sony z3 compact that I use on AT&T so no CDMA isn't an issue I think.

One that support Digital Audio over USB-C, since those that only route out Analog Audio don't work with the Pixels! USB-C makes everything so much easier! Who needs stupid headphone jacks!

I've been researching true wireless earbuds for a while now and yes, many reviews have mentioned video sync issues.

That's just the way it works. SD cards are dumb and relying on them to make the phone usable is dumber. There's just no way around the many problems they cause when used this way.

^^^ yeah that sucks. If there were a way to force a 2-way sync it would be fine... well for non 'live' content anyway. Wires have no latency and turns out that's a really nice feature a lot of the time

Hmmm not exactly great, but thanks!

I know Bluetooth 5 is meant to be super low latency if you have stuff new enough to use it. Still not getting good vibes about this wireless everything future though

Bluetooth is fast, but it's buffered. The Bluetooth driver is built to compensate for this and pretty much any video player as well. The video player gets told to desync audio with x amount of time. You can see how fast it corrects itself if you disconnect Bluetooth during playback and how it pauses to sync the buffer when you reconnect. Any problems with out of sync audio isn't so much with the protocol or the hardware itself but how the whole chain works together. I used my phone for navigation once in a car where the Bluetooth didn't compensate for buffering, it was like 3 seconds out. "Turn left now" when you've already turned and the next song starts playing three seconds after I've pressed next.

Take a look at this list of quick reviews of true wireless earbuds and you'll see that they mention sync issues on a lot of them.

The Essential phones charger is a 27W charger that's USB-P and really does get up there when charging. Outside of the phone you might be able to pick up their charger alone if you ask them nicely. It's metal and the cable it comes with is braided and fancy.

They might want to sell them separate until they get the software to not suck on their beautiful phone.

I know OnePlus gets a ton of crap, but their Dash charging that puts most of the work on the charger instead of the phone sounded like the best solution to hot damaging fast charging. Has there been any issue with OnePlus batteries that have used that over the last few years?

I use a quick charger only when I need a quick jolt midday usually. Otherwise I usually stick to a older 1A HTC charger or my PC's USB port that had phone charging power even turned off which I believe is 1.5A.

Yeah I have a Bluetooth speaker which... now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure I've used it for video a couple of times without noticing a problem 🤔

It definitely buffers for music though, and then if it loses connection for a minute it goes faster to catch up. Bluetooth is weird and a land of contrasts

A bluetooth audio connection always brings latency with it, usually around the 120ms range. There is a specific codec for low latency bluetooth audio called "aptx low latency", which both the transmitting and receiving device need to support in order for it to work.

I hope someone competent in regards to audio gets his hands on a Pixel 2 and does some measurements on that dongle, to see whether it is worthwhile compared to previous phones with a jack.

If that's for all codecs, that aren't specifically low delay, I don't really want to know how bad the reflexes are of those people that claim not to notice a delay when watching video.

FWIW, I've never noticed latency problems with any of the Bluetooth headphones I use. I always buy those cheap 15-20 dollar ones from Mpow and the like because they're good enough and I don't have to baby them because they're so cheap. Ive probably used 6 or more of them over the past 5 years.

Granted, I rarely use them for video, but I do from time to time.

Like has been mentioned it probably relies on getting the correct chain if drivers and apps.

The latency isn't enormous by any means, it's well possible that people who aren't sensitive to that sort of stuff won't notice when people are just talking in a video, but you're almost certainly gonna see it with a gunshot going off for example.

So I take it that if the Pixel 2 is outputting digital audio only, there's got to be a DAC in the USB-C -> 3.5mm adapter itself? Is that accurate?

That's the same as what the Essential Phone had going with its dongle. The Dongle has the DAC. So I'd assume that's the case here.

I never noticed bluetooth latency until I tried using a bluetooth headset with GearVR. Then I quite clearly could hear the latency. Any game will be very obvious.

For what it's worth, the aptx low latency stuff actually does what it's supposed to, I've played video games and watched sports with it with no issues. As I said, there are unfortunately not very many devices that support it, guessing demand for that specific stuff is pretty low.

How in the hell do you make this work? It plays some random compilation called "discover weekly" or just some other random bullshit for me and not the actual discover weekly radio thing. My spotify account is linked to assistant and it's set as the default music player.

I used an R1 HD travelling abroad, and aside from the questionable data security it was decent for the $60 I spent. Only real issues I had was the screen being polarized such that I couldn't see it in portrait orientation with my sunglasses on, and the data seemed very slow (1-2Mbps tops) on both wifi and cellular. Not really an issue with navigation or web browsing so much as downloading anything more than a couple hundred KB.

No complaints here. My R1 HD worked great in Canada on a Project Fi data SIM. I don't use it as a daily driver, though.
