So an email came in: Hey, you guys were working on my PC earlier and now I got this blue screen ( 0x1A) and had to reboot, whats going on? Both the contractor here and I replied at the same time. My reply: Hey, I pulled the error log on the bluescreen, looks like a corrupt driver. Let me know when I can connect to your system and fix it. Contractor reply: That is one of the errors everyone is allowed one of per quarter. Basically, there is a known potential environmental cause for it (Sun spots if you can believe it) which wouldn't indicate a hardware problem. So if it happens again we might have some bad ram.

A student walked in to the help desk claiming that we were hacking his school-provided email. He was sure that it was being tampered with because he kept getting spam from different pornography websites, which he had helpfully printed out. The help desk personnel were too timid to make him to leave or call security, so he was there for an hour and a half showing different porn sites to my co-workers.

Bit of both, but I also made it a little wider so things are less easy to miss. It's maybe 3cm wide?

(Can't remember why I couldn't just right-click for the menu.) Also, it pissed off everyone using my computer or just shoulder-surfing.

Certificate security warnings came in. Looks like I was a bit behind on getting the new SSL cert installed on the exchange server. Whoops. I get started on installing the renewed cert. Ticket went out from one of my users to the msp. New guy at the msp responds "sorry, we were doing security updates on your server today. We'll have it fixed shortly." Lol what? I called msp to clue them in on what I was doing. President of msp (one of my old bosses) follows up making sure the alert was caused by the SSL cert expiring and that installing the new cert fixed the issue. I know he was getting these details so he could ream the new guy on passing factually incorrect non-answers that placed blame on the msp when it was totally my fault. I'd love to be a fly on the wall, that guy gets really really unpleasant when techs made his company look bad.

A fellow goon friend who isn't in IT just complained to me about her IT guy. She needed a crappy flash drive to send some files to another department, so she asked her IT guy for a cheap one that would be safe to send and that would be ok to lose in case they don't send it back. He gave her one that had all of the department's bitlocker recovery keys and said "Don't delete those."

Were I her, I'd send him and my boss an email questioning this. If they don't do something else, delete everything that is not her files before sending it. Find a way to make her data too big to fit otherwise.

She said she was going to use Dropbox instead of the drive. I told her instead put the recovery keys on Dropbox, format the drive, send her files on it and tell the recipient to keep it.
