I don't think the potential for death/failure is ever what unnerves me about a good horror game, so I don't mind easy combat in general. I kinda prefer "easy" combat over stuff like Alien Isolation or Amnesia where you have to always be running.

I've yet to play a "you are chased by an invincible scary monster" game that 100% gets it right. You either figure out its AI patterns or it just cheats and kills you anyway, and both extremes take you out of the experience.

It's very hard to sustain atmosphere when the player is repeatedly getting jerked out of the moment and forced to repeat the last bit of content. Plus fear of getting killed by a big monster you see running at you is the least interesting kind of fear.

I thought that both demos for Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill P.T. did the horror right. The problem is that in full games the devs decide to ramp it up and end up giving the player guns and the tension somewhat goes away. It could probably work if they stuck to the original idea and kept the title 4-6 hours long but both of those things kill sales so I get why it's not happening.

RE7 with a gun was fine I thought, especially due to being against an unstoppable madman in the first half and then a horrid bugwoman later on. The few enemies in the beginning mainly are clustered moldy fuckers and the tension is still there at this point, but the boat segment onward completely wrecks all the tension. The ending's ridiculous final encounter redeems things but there's a big third of the game where you are constantly fighting poo poo and then literally running through a gauntlet in the salt mines. The parts of RE7 before you leave the estate are really, really strong and legit terrifying, especially when the game has that hyper-real PT look to it. I'm convinced Capcom accidentally made a great horror game but then ran out of time and threw some RE5-esque poo poo to fill it out.

Don't forget that the boat starts with a short sequence where there are moulded enemies and you haven't found a gun yet. But yeah, it's turned into a free-for-all by the end.

The perfect David Lynch would have no tutorial or ingame information, a manual that only hints at mechanics, and an anticlimatic final boss that comes out of nowhere.

When people talk about "good bad games" I don't really know what they mean because if the product is unsalvageable in some respect it's usually enough to cast a shadow over the rest of it. Except for Deadly Premonition.

The Stranger Things mobile game is pretty dope, it's an 8bit Zelda-like game with a decent amount of content (I'm like 7 hours in and around 3/4 done) for free with no microtransactions. And if you're a fan of the show it hints at some stuff that I assume is going to be in season 2.

Killer 7 is pretty close to "what if Lynch but Japanese." The stories and premises are absolutely batshit. It's probably one of the craziest non-Kojima games in existence.

Lynch's work inspired a lot of what went into Silent Hill 2, but SH2 in turn inspired a whole lot of other games so some are only Lynchian by proxy.
