Nexus 5X just died. Won't boot past the Google logo. So what am I buying as a replacement, a Pixel? I need a phone now so I won't wait on a Pixel 2 apparently. And it looks like that or a Moto X4? (also holy poo poo is their troubleshooting support staff ever bad, dude was reading off a script with actively untrue instructions about what I should be seeing on my screen)

That's odd then, I was out of warranty as well but I mentioned it was bootlooping and they agreed to replace it.

Apparently bootlooping replacements stopped last month (as in last week, end of September) and now I have to contact LG. I'm a fi customer and ordered the Pixel 2 XL yesterday morning, but directly from the Google store with their financing thing. Did I do this wrong? I'm hoping the financing thing is just attached to my fi bill like with my XL.

I'm not sure I can trust the delivery estimate this far out, but it seems like it won't delay it at all.

Take a look and see if you've gotten emails mentioning Synchrony Bank (like inviting you to set up an online account), that's what the separate Google Store financing is. You would've seen that name on the screen where you punch in your info for a credit check. I never ordered a phone through Fi other than the one when I was first signing up so I don't know if that process would look similar enough to be confused for the other though. The Google Store/Synchrony is basically setting up a credit line that only works at the Google Store and you have a web account, pay like any other card, etc. If you do do that "minimum payment" is what you want to set up your recurring draw for, that'll be the $X/mo the financing works out to; "statement balance" is the full value of the phone. I had to look closely at that when I set it up but I might just be dumb.

Well hell, if I'm going to have to wait two weeks for a replacement 5X, why not just drop cash on a Pixel 2 that'll ship in two weeks instead? Is there some hidden underlying flaw I don't know about because it's brand new and nobody's gotten their hands on it yet?

I'm getting almost 100 for my cracked screen 5x on a trade in. Is that good or should I fix the screen first? Getting a x4 since I can't really afford a pixel right now but wanted a new phone. Every time I've called the staff it has been pretty good service. Do they service different call centers for different areas? I've never gotten anyone from overseas when I called or had them call me.

Their first line support are barely competent and will claim they can't do something even when they absolutely can. 100% of all problems that aren't basic "how do i computar" stuff end in "we need to have a specialist call you" which literally never happens; I've started just going "no, fix it before I leave here" and poo poo actually gets done once they realize helping is faster than filibustering.. Looks like I'm getting my 6P replaced with a 128GB Pixel XL but it might only be because my original 6P replacement was still under warranty. Now the question becomes do I just let it ride or trade it in towards a Pixel 2 XL.

The only complaint I have with the Nexus vs the 6p is the speaker volume and the lack of stereo speakers. Its fine with headphones, at least at home, but I used to be able to play music out of the phone and be satisfied with the quality and volume. Not so anymore.

T-Mobile will pay you $325 to bring your pixel 2 + $410 trade-in with Google

I'm thinking of switching to Fi, but I have a few concerns: 1. I used to use Google Voice, and it was pretty unreliable - missing texts/calls, no VM, etc. I've heard some similar complaints about Fi, I feel like. Is this still an issue? 2. I've heard issues of runaway data use from Android making your Fi bill spike. Is this also pretty unsubstantiated?

IuniusBrutus posted:I'm thinking of switching to Fi, but I have a few concerns: 1. Voice and Fi are pretty different. Voice is using the internet to make calls and texts, Fi is using actual carriers (Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular) to make calls. The most you'll get is a lovely signal but you can switch over to another carrier if you want (though Fi does this on the fly, it doesn't always pick the best signal). 2. I've heard of this too but it's only seemed to affect the 6P and the 2016 Pixels from what I've heard and I've really only heard about it on Reddit. If this does happen, you can always call and tell them and they'll just remove the charges.

Can someone on a 5x with a fi approved Oreo version tell me their version number, please? About phone build number (not from beta switch trick from an ota would be best) This is surprisingly hard to Google, I want to clean flash from the developer portal.

I had usage issues all the time with my 5x. I'd baby my data like nothing else and struggled to keep under 3 GB per month. When I switched to Cricket and stopped babying my usage, I was hitting 2.5 GB per month. I've also had the phone disconnect from unreliable Wi-Fi without notification while watching video and racked up like 1/2 GB in a day. I've also had a random app pull data for no reason while driving and blow through my limit. I ended installing an app to control the daily, but that app was buggy and the whole experience was stressful in general.

Data anecdote: I used to use a 5X and now have a Pixel, and I don't really struggle with data usage. I consistently keep it well under a gig most months. Basically, I think YMMV.
|
# ? Oct 8, 2017 19:49 |
I had the runaway data issue on my 5x, it turned out to be a google background service making GBS threads itself, I disabled it and the problem went away. I went from around a gig a month on t-mobile to ~1.5-2 on Fi, but t-mobile sucks out loud here and Fi is decent so I'm entirely willing to believe I'm just using it more. The real problem is when they randomly give you a "delayed usage charge" with no way to verify it's legitimate.

So long as voice is reliable and I can submit refund requests for data issues I can deal with that! My only other concern is phone availability; I get that Google can cross ship you a replacement very quickly, but I can't be without a phone due to work. I know I can throw my sim in an unlocked T-Mobile phone and have service work, but I've also heard that Google will do poo poo like lock your account do to that. Anyone have expri be with this? I'd just need it for a couple days, if ever, while I wait for a replacement phone to arrive.
|
# ? Oct 8, 2017 20:37 |
I have not heard of anyone having that issue and I've read a LOT of "my 5x took a poo poo and google put my replacement on a slow boat from china" threads where people are putting their sim in whatever crap phone they have lying around.

They sternly warn that third party phones aren't supported, but I don't think anyone has actually been burned by using one. Edit: ^^ Yeah, I've used the data SIM abroad for a secondary phone. Works well.
