The Jarvis map is very cool but I have no idea where anything is yet. The big blue house next to the Jarvis home is very interesting because it's 3 stories including the basement, which has a door that leads directly outside and apparently can't be locked. The first time I spawn as Jason on this map I'm just going to stealth in that basement for a while and try to get a player to poo poo their pants.

This guy has some very longwinded and grognardy videos where he explains things in front of a chalkboard about counselor tactics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uornT2GTsOQ&list=PLUPyeawSfRpbxfmmAa4WlgXw_L_uhmwSo You can ignore a lot of the stupider parts, like the one where tells you to taunt Jason and flash your flashlight before kiting him, but otherwise there's decent info in there about broken windows, evading Jason in the long house, etc. It helped me consider some basic strategies when playing counselor and also to recognize strategies counselors use while playing as Jason. For example, I ignore attempts to kite now by just Morphing away to kill the kiter's teammates, or I fake a counselor close to me out by Shifting but then going after someone further off in the distance. e: Also don't think that pointing your shotgun at Jason to "make him swerve" will always work. Now when I'm Jason I will just come straight at you in the open, knowing that even if you stun me you're wasting a shotgun that you're never getting back. If you are a counselor your primary objective is to loot as much as you can, as thoroughly as you can, as fast as you can. Jason is weaker at start and gets progressively harder as his abilities unlock, his cooldowns reduce, and especially once he gets rage. Once you've played enough, you can know when to leave doors open or when to take the time to barricade, as a new player you should probably be barricading everything. Jason will take time to get through, unless he is part 8, Savini, or Part 4 in which case your safe time is much reduced. Use windows to climb through and escape Jason. It's better to take window damage then be killed. Run to the next nearest cabin and repeat. If Jason takes time to go around and break windows, use the time inside to finish looting then hop through the window anyway. Your method of survival is to ensure that Jason wastes time. A good Jason knows he cannot waste time chasing you too long, but neither will he break off if he feels like you are low-hanging fruit. If Jason tunnels you, it will take a lot more skill to keep yourself alive, but it also means he is likely not a good Jason and people will get out. Take solace in your sacrifice for the greater good.

And you WILL die. Treat being a counsellor like its a rougelite of sorts. Just do your best to TRY and survive knowing you probably wont. Each thing you do gives you points, so if you treat each "outing" as a counsellor as a point hunt you'll probably have more fun than if you're trying to treat it as a serious attempt at "winning". If that makes sense. AND HOLY HELL! The Jarvis map is something else, huh? It feels HUGE.

I'll never swerve for any reason as Jason. It kills the roleplay element and makes me feel like I'm just playing some other random game and not Friday the 13th. If you're gonna shoot, go ahead, I'm just gonna get right back up. And honestly, once you have a handle on the basic mechanics of the game(what the objectives are, which items get placed in which objectives, where the map exits are, etc.) the best strategy to have fun as a counselor is no strategy. Just do whatever seems like the right move at the moment and fly by the seat of your pants. When you do that and still somehow make it out it's really satisfying. Also, don't stop fighting, you never know when Jason's gonna have to teleport away or if that next drawer is gonna have a health spray in it. It's fun to roleplay as an actual person who's being chased by a murderer because it's like an interactive horror movie, you wouldn't just give up and allow yourself to be killed in real life would you? Sometimes you're scratching and clawing to survive and it seems like Jason just won't give you a moments rest.....and then somehow by some crazy combination of circumstances you make it out alive and those games are the best.

That's why both extremes of counselor types are the worst, the suicidal trolls and the tryhards. Suicidal trolls will rob Jason of a kill right in front of him, climbing through windows or stepping in counselor traps, or just straight up quitting at the moment of the kill animation. Tryhards will use the "most efficient" strats to try and do objectives, or they'll be the ones who will play only as Vanessa or Buggzy and do nothing but run from you for as long as possible. Neither type is fun to play against, or with if you're a counselor.

A good Vanessa who is making GBS threads on Jason is doing their job, and you better be fixing something while it's going on. I once had a game where I took Jason on two loops around Packanack, where the rest of them did gently caress all. Probably because Terry was stoned. It was great.

Grey Fox posted:I'm guessing it's a bug, but as Part IV I've sometimes managed to hit a door so hard it blows out the adjacent windows. I loving love it. It is, and it isn't. Basically, his swings are an AOE. But apparently they haven't figured out how to separate between hitting multiple counselors (as it should) and not hitting multiple objects (as it shouldn't). There's a brief period where they made his swing single-target, and when the counselors figured that out, there were just massive Jason beatdowns because he didn't have the means of dealing with multiple people at once. The general idea in his design is that swings are meant for crowds and grabs are meant for singles. The current solution is better than the single-target thing that they had tried, but I hope that they are able to find a way of splitting the swings on counselors and objects. Because a Jason with Destruction destroying a wall and two doors in one swing is a bit much. Ghostpilot fucked around with this message at 21:24 on Oct 12, 2017 |

If that's the case, I would expect a narrowing of the AOE or some kind of modification to the window's hitbox. In at least one instance, the window was far enough away from the door that it startled me and I had to walk over to check it out. Orrrrrrr maybe lag played a part. Or something else. Making games is hard!
