Liberalism has reached the absolute ends of what it's capable of, which is proven by just how frequently liberals define themselves in opposition to what they believe isn't possible. The sheer amount of ego investment into being a liberal, into having it be an essential element of their identity, is bound to cause this kind of reactionary backlash. Rather than seeing it as the death of hope or whatever, we should see it as a sign that politics are moving in a decisively left wing direction and away from their control. But they will fight for that control tooth and nail, and we'll have to pry off their fingers one by one. They'll be screaming for tax credits all the way to the end.
