A Western friend said it was their favorite movie, I said that's absurd it was borderline terrible and it started a debate between the eastern and western people. Ask different people when talking about movies and see if it's true or not.

Hilariously salty piece in the NP yesterday about the Flames and Nenshi

http://nationalpost.com/sports/hock...4c-c0bb8d557230

quote:

How the two sides will be able to come together again with another attempt to bridge the massive gap between their respective proposals is anyone’s guess.

The Flames did their best to derail Nenshi’s (purple) reign, which won’t be forgotten by a mayor with a massive ego who promised his feistiness won’t dissipate in this, his third term.

Adding to the Flames uphill battle is the fact 11 of the 15 councillors who voted for the city’s last arena proposal were re-elected.

Nenshi certainly lost votes based on his penchant for raising taxes and spending city dollars in questionable ways, be it gaudy, overpriced “art” or a $240 million library.

A rink is seen by many as another overzealous expense for taxpayers unless the right deal is struck.

Perhaps the solution lies in bringing in a third party like mayoral hopeful Andre Chabot or past mayor Dave Bronconnier to spark and oversee negotiations that will inevitably begin again.

As it stands, it’s a fine mess indeed.

The chances of the Flames five-man ownership group, spearheaded by notoriously fierce negotiator Murray Edwards, would choose to keep the team in Calgary longer than four years without an arena deal in place are slim.

Choose to ignore that fact at your city’s peril Mr. Mayor.

Meanwhile, the Flames owners need to get a grip on the fact their demands need significant readjustment if things have any chance of being resolved with an arena in Victoria Park.

Forget the inherent threat to move, which understandably annoys frustrated Calgarians who too-easily dismiss it as pure folly – without a new rink an NHL franchise in Calgary is not sustainable.

I'm the part where a library is called an overzealous expense in an article arguing for massive sports team subsidies.

I looked into it and the Flames have averaged 97-100% attendance every season since 2010-2011. If only there was some market based solution to this problem. Hmmm :thunk:

The Strip in Vegas is pretty inhospitable along the main stretch. Several intersections are blocked off and crossings are done with bridges as if you're navigating over a river.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/winnipeg-taxis-uber-epc-1.4360455

quote:

Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman claims he was threatened by a taxi-company representative over the city's plans to create regulations to govern ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft.

Speaking at an executive policy committee meeting on Wednesday, Bowman alleged to a group of taxi-industry delegates that a member of their ranks threatened him over the weekend.

"One member of your delegation certainly threatened me this weekend, on Saturday," the mayor told Winnipeg Community Taxi Coalition representative Scott McFadyen, Unicity Taxi's Tarlochan Gillm, Duffy's representative Jaspal Bedi and lobbyist Ajay Chopra.

The quartet appeared before EPC to support Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie's request to allow the taxi industry to be involved in the creation of new regulations governing ride-hailing services.

The province is expected to pass legislation that will allow companies such as Uber and Lyft to operate in Winnipeg as soon as March. The city is preparing to create regulations to govern the new services as well as cabs, in line with provincial plans to dissolve its own Taxicab Board.

Asked to elaborate upon the threat, he said Chopra approached him at a Diwali event on Saturday, asked for a photo and issued some form of threat.

"There were comments he whispered to me afterwards which I perceived as a threat," Bowman said, refusing to divulge what Chopra said. "It's unclear to me whether this was a physical threat or a political threat, but it was certainly unwelcomed."

Chopra confirmed he interrupted the mayor at the Diwali event but denies he threatened the mayor in any manner.

"I mentioned that I will work as hard and as effectively as possible for the community and for the taxi drivers to ensure fairness, equity, and safety," he said in a statement. "My interpretation was that it was a friendly moment and I left optimistic for good dialogue."

Chopra and his taxi-industry colleagues appeared before EPC to once again assert they have not been consulted and wish to be part of a working group that will help the city create regulations governing all vehicles for hire.

Bedi accused the mayor of cooking up a deal with Premier Brian Pallister, but later apologized for his language after Bowman objected.

"That's quite an accusation," Bowman told Bedi. "I'm a husband. I'm a father. When somebody says I've cut a deal with another politician, you should have some evidence to back that up."

The mayor also asserted he was threatened in some manner and asked the delegates to be more respectful.

Bowman's office has been asked to elaborate on the nature of the threat. Taxi-industry representatives said they have no knowledge of the incident.

The Winnipeg Community Taxi Coalition replaces a previous taxi-industry umbrella organization represented by Toronto consultant Michael Diamond, McFadyen said.

McFadyen is the brother of former Manitoba Progressive Conservative leader Hugh McFadyen, who now works in public affairs and has lobbied the province on behalf of Uber.

Scott McFadyen declined to comment on working against his brother on the ride-hailing governance file.

Executive policy committee approved an amended version of Eadie's motion.

Where they put it, it will be mainly a facility for the homeless people to pull their pud to Internet porn. That little corner of downtown is hilariously lovely. The nearest train platform recently had a random stabbing in broad daylight.

Monopoly really is the key word here. The Flames, like all pro sports, have a monopoly on high level pro hockey in Calgary. And they sell out every game.

Has nobody in the entire organization ever seen a Supply / Demand chart? This is literally econ 101 stuff :psyduck:

Is that all the area can ever be?

The Toronto Reference Library, biggest of the city's public libraries and the crown jewel of the system, was planned for a site that, at the time, was hippie central. I'm sure the choice of location angered a good number of squares who saw it as some kind of sick joke shrine to stoners. One happy-go-lucky provincial politician called the area a "festering sore".

Now of course, what once was hippie central is the place for the rich and famous to see and be seen and a block away is the poshest shopping in town (in the country?)
