It's divisive, there are plenty of people who love 2 in this thread but I hated it towards the end. It's not bad in remotely the same ways as 1 but it has a lot of problems.

I'm currently playing through the Yakuza series after getting hooked from how good Yakuza 0 was. Yakuza 3 is a definite low point. Stop it with the orphanage politics, Sega. I just want to beat dudes up.

And Chapter 3 was more or less a golf mission wtf

As someone who finished Witcher 1 2 days ago and has started Witcher 2 so basically just ahead of you on this journey... man is it loving rough at the start. The tutorial may be the worst I've ever seen and the prologue is pretty poo poo as well. The little I've seen of Chapter 1 feels like it picks up there so I'm hopeful it's gonna be worth it.

Somehow the controls are worse than 1 though. Overall it feels more jank that 1, though 1 definitely felt more dated. Also the combat is hard as gently caress to start. Like, getting 2-3 shot hard so definitely look up some tips if the combat doesn't tick right away.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

I got into witcher 1's gameplay pretty easily but Witcher 2 was much harder. Combined with overheating problems killing my computer every time I tried to do anything exciting and my first 20 hours of gameplay were trying to finish the tutorial, so I was sick to death of the game before it started. So my distaste for the game is not entirely fair but I see no reason to go back to it when Witcher 3 is so much more playable and fun right out of the gate.

Do you feel the decision making from tw1 has affected your game much in tw2 upto now? I'm blind to the whole series so I don't know how much carries over.

Barely anything. A few lines, and often not even that. One major example is a major character being spared, only to be murdered anyway and the plot moves on the same way come game three.

Great series but there's not the consequence between instalments you'd think.

Nah I haven't realised anything special, though my run was pretty close to the cannon decisions anyway I think.

Right now the forest is making me long for the swamps. It's like a developer missed the decimal place on the spawns, and the looting is even worse than it was in 1. Every fight is me is trying to loot poo poo and then getting attacked and then getting out my sword again and then killing poo poo then putting my sword away and then trying to loot and then getting attacked... usually 2-3 battles for every battle I should have to fight. And the fighting is not the best, I think I'll go a mage build and just igni AoE everything dead like I did eventually in 1.

Do you have the normal edition or the enhanced edition? They fixed a lot of the jankiness in EE.

W2 had Iorveth, and is therefore the best of the three.

Oh yeah Witcher 2 Chapter 1 so good. Follow this person across the forest (it's jank as gently caress too even in EE, I got to watch her try to get up stairs for literally a minute and people you follow in general stop and turn to you if you approach them so you're constantly stopping/starting). When you get back follow this other person across the forest. Fight this boss who periodically has an immunity shield and has instant attacks for you to get hit by randomly as you try to get close to them. Oh, and you lose the fight in a cutscene.

Now follow this guy back to town from the other side of the forest.

That's the stuff game. This is the poo poo I like to complain about. So far my verdict is Witcher 1 is better and Witcher 2 is skippable and I probably would skip it if I didn't like picking at games as I play them almost as much as playing them for fun. Still, hopefully it picks up in Chapter 2.

My thoughts exactly. I recently finished the game and the whole thing felt like somewhat of a wet fart. Guess that's why people really insist on playing MGS through release order.

IIRC they removed the entire hostess mini game which is why some of your side quest dates with various women seem so disjointed and out of place.

They also removed a quiz game that basically required that you were Japanese to have even the most minor chance of winning.

Speaking of disjointed and out of place moments in a game about jump-kicking people, did Sleeping Dogs have similar stuff cut out of it? I remember there was a bit of flirting between Wei and... some lady I forget, and the next time I saw her she was flipping poo poo about me cheating on her with another lady that helped me hack some security cameras. I was decidedly dating neither and pretty sure I never met the latter in person, but suddenly she's trying to run me over or something. It's been forever since I last played but that whole situation still sticks out to me as a "what the gently caress is this" moment.

Cutting the creepy porny stuff out of Yakuza was a net good for the series and I wish they hadn't stopped doing it. Like I can't imagine having to grind dating sim minigames and watching porn videos in Yakuza Zero is something anyone actually enjoys.

John Murdoch posted:

The late game pacing also makes no sense. I don't see how it's possible to ever reach level 20 and not have enough upgrade cores to instantly level that character to 40. Literally everything you do dumps cores on you after a certain point while the XP curve (or more likely badly scaling rewards) means it takes an awkwardly large amount of effort to get there, even taking into account Braddock's squad XP bonus and running a difficulty level higher than recommended for a bit more still.

Following up on this, because the game just revealed the last piece of the lovely puzzle. To unlock each character's special piece of gear you have to run a special endgame dungeon, which is unlocked by doing an Assassin's Creed-esque "send agents out on assignment" minigame thing. Just like every other dungeon, completing it grants three pieces of gear. So in the base game you have to run it 4 times to get everything for the 12 characters, and then the DLC characters add an extra run.

Well it turns out that completing the dungeon also resets the entire assignment map and re-locks the dungeon, forcing you to repeat the entire process from scratch.

The assignments can be run in the background while you do other stuff, but due to the way they're designed they'll almost never synchronize in a way that makes sense, either due to territories with four assigments when you can only send out a maximum of three agents, or timers so short you'll only be halfway through a mission by the time they complete. And obviously you can only manage this from your HQ, not mid-mission.

Oh, and sometimes the assignments terminate with a dungeon of their own, which you have to complete before moving on.

Mission area limits are loving stupid. In Shadow of War I ran "out of the mission area" (so 50 feet to the right) to grab an orc to restore my life cause the warchief I was fighting was kicking my rear end. Well I failed the mission for leaving the area and restarted from a check point at the start of the fight. However the game decided to annul my bonus objective (don't get detected) even though it was accomplished before that checkpoint. Thanks game.

One of the things that really annoyed me about Slime Rancher, early on, was the lack of a map system. I was pleased that not long after realizing it was gonna be a dealbreaker, an update was announced that a map would be in the works.

Time passes, I find that the game has updated again. Load it up, play a bit randomly, and read the patch notes, specifically about the new zone, The Wilds:

quote:

The warp network to The Wilds is buggy and highly unreliable! Be prepared when venturing to The Wilds as you will warp into one of four locations with no immediate means of exiting. Only by reaching one of three exit teleporters will you be able to escape.

Well that's annoying, but okay...

quote:

Additionally, The Wilds is so far off the grid that your map will not work. This may seem like a contrivance to make things more difficult but like, no, it’s totally because of LORE.

gently caress YOU

(oh, and to make matters worse, "one of three exit teleporters" means that only one of those three teleporters is actually active at any point. :suicide:)
