I think Total War Games having end-game challenges is good and my biggest apprehension with Mortal Empires is that it doesn't have one. The Vortex Campaign is still poorly designed in places and could use a great deal of polish.

I would love to see Mortal Empires to have an expanded version of time Chaos invasion where in addition to Chaos you also get incursions of Skaven, Beastmen, and Greenskins along with giving certain rival AI factions some bonuses to help them become more of a threat. You'd get large incursions from various map edges you'd have to deal with so regardless of who you are playing you get affected. It also gives more variety since you're not just fighting Norsca/Chaos.

I think most of the problems with Vortex can be solved by making enemy armies spawn outside your territory and/or making them beeline for your ritual sites and ignore other towns (excluding HElf gates). Just anything that makes them capable to be prepared against. No clue how to fix interventions though. Maybe spawn them on the water. Give you time to prepare and them the option of selecting their target?

I don't know, I thought it was super cool when i started a ritual at +5000 gold/turn as Teclis and by the time the turn was over my capital was under siege by an intervention army and I was at -7000 gold/turn. I also foolishly had my defensive stack a few turns away from the capital, defending the two ritual sites, meaning I went from a really comfortable gold buffer to completely bankrupt before I could break the siege.

The good thing about those intervention stacks is that you actually get to defend your capital. I would LOVE to have an event where Thorgrim with a full stack of elite units are in a dire effort to defend Karaz a Karak and still have it be a dire effort. Normally I almost never have to defend my capital against any serious threat late game.

Put a stack in your capital and build a garrison, congrats, you can now autoresolve away all intervention armies by sallying out

If you're caught out of position you (or more importantly the dumb rear end AI) can overpay for a group of mercenaries to reinforce your siege defense and pray they can take enough heat off you to hold the walls.

Yeah, being able to fight some epic defensive siege battles is nice, the intervention stacks are still dumb though. From experience, they seem to always spawn adjacent to your most weakly defended ritual site/and/or capital. And they all spawn in the same place and form a conga line, naturally. The actual Chaos armies I don't mind so much since they start from a distance and you can actually maneuver to intercept and what not, even if they're overwhelming.

Intervention armies always seem to spawn on your capital. I have had the chaos armies spawn right on top of my capital as well, but also elsewhere. Interventions are always on top of my capital.

I have no idea if it's random or set positions. I'm on my first run, did my second to last ritual, and all the Chaos stacks spawned miles away in a different part of my territory and tore a path through it because I stacked on the ritual sites. Other empire stacks spawn right beside your ritual sites though (I think).

I've had chaos spawn five turns away. I've also had them spawn on the border of the territory they want to destroy.

Perhaps it would be more interesting if intervention armies not only spawned further out, but spawned as horde armies as well so they were more self sustaining. It would be kind of interesting if some crippled intervention stack ended up persisting over time.

I've had better luck with the intervention spawns than the chaos ones. Intervention armies seem to at least always show up next to the ritual sites, and will generally go for them unless they're being sieged already. Chaos stacks? Yeah, don't worry about it, we'll spawn those ages away from the ritual sites so you have plenty of time to prepare. How about right in the middle of your empire where they can 1-turn raze your non-target cities with zero opposition? That seems like a good spot. Have 6 of them.

Intervention armies are kind of dumb because you can basically use them to cripple factions who had a rough start as long as you are sailing a lord around to Hoover up stacks of cash. I sent a 10k intervention at skaven on their first ritual and they never recovered.

I never buy them because I feel bad for the poor souls I'm sending out to die. And it's easier to save the cash and wait to see which faction pulls ahead by the 3rd/4th ritual and dealing with their sprawling, poorly defended empire personally. The ai is perfectly capable of failing 2 or 3 attempts in a row without interference (Clan Mors).

Man besides being better in general is Warhammer 2 also better optimised than TW1? I jumped back down to try out the Wood Elves but I can feel my system dragging with more or less the same graphics settings. It might be just the trees/shadows though, those guys' maps have a lot of trees.

It's better for me. Also when 2 does chug due to a massive battle, I've noticed that the UI and unit portrait seem unaffected. I can zoom in smoothly on a localized slideshow or look elsewhere and my battle fps goes back up to normal. This is the first game, TW or otherwise, where poor performance hasn't caused everything to chug, just one aspect. It's a strange effect. Better, but strange.

For Mortal Empires, will I need to have WH1 installed or do I just need to have it purchased on Steam? I've been looking to free up some room on my HD and it seems silly to keep WH1 around once it's been more or less integrated into WH2.

Man I sure am glad my dark shards decided they will not target units on top of walls without direct orders. That'd be awkward, the guys climbing ladders would get to the top and there'd be no one left to kill if they just fired where they pleased, or at will if you will.

^^^I don't think they'll shoot if guys are actively climbing as they count as on the wall and they don't want to friendly fire them. Death Hags - when? Why? I threw a level 12 Hag with almost pure combat skills into the fray of a scrub Chaos Rebellion force, against some Chaos Spawn and their level 1 lord plus the battered remnants of a unit of marauders. She got shredded and barely inflicted any casualties before outright dying, at which point I can only imagine her soul was obliterated by Khaine for her shameful display. How are you supposed to use these things? And is it worth throwing the Cauldron of Blood on them?

As far as I can tell, these things seem to follow gun rules for when they fire, even though they kind of arc fire. On the other hand, I haven't had a problem getting guns or repeaters to fire up walls either.

I've had ranged units decide they need to walk all the way up to the walls without firing when giving them a direct order, but about 90% of the time it works fine whether it's fire at will or targeted. Guard mode might help? Normally I just re-position when it happens and they start working again. The one time I did a ritual (Delf game, hard) three chaos armies spawned in the centre of my capital province and got murdered by my defending stacks. Delves are pretty nuts against chaos infantry lines. Then Tyrion sent an intervention stack the next turn and it was actually a reasonably fun fight, I was out-artilleried and out-archered and I liked having to adapt to that after ~50 turns of absolute ranged supremacy. Then I autoresolved the dregs and pressed end turn eight times. I decided not to do any more rituals after that. Is there any way to mod a skill points buff for AI only, or create a dump skill that's restricted to player? I'd like to vomit skill points at the AI in hope they'll accidentally make an effective lord. I don't mind honour systeming myself but I'd prefer not to have to manually track levels. I send the Hag in with some spears or swords to back her up. The enemy attacks go into the spearline, letting her blender people safely. She becomes a chariot when she gets her Cauldron.
