Actual answer for ASMR in case people are genuinely confused: Have you ever gotten kind of a pleasant tingling in your head when, like, thinking about something, or listening to something, or (if you think way back, this is a pretty big one for some people) as a child in school having your head checked for lice? ASMR is the made-up name for that phenomenon and the videos attempt to induce that feeling for relaxation purposes. I believe 'ASMR roleplay', unless people are seriously trying to do it at the tabletop, is "I will roleplay as your barber and use these haircutting scissors near the microphone to try and make sounds that create that feeling".

My wife calls it a "shiver shake". I'm totally unsurprised that it has a recently-made-up name and an online community though.

Halloween Jack posted:No. Some people never get it. Some people say it's the same thing as 'getting chills' when you listen to good music (aka 'frisson' which is a real term) and others say "no it is similar but somehow different". The two best-known triggers for the feeling are clicking/tapping sounds that are close-by, and the feeling of 'inspection/attention' - sometimes to the viewer, but often to some object. So many videos combine those two aspects. So yeah pretty girls can invest into a microphone and easily rack up a bunch of views if you want since some people just want a woman to talk to them. On the flipside you can get into some unusual territory. Anyway here's a plague doctor analysing a telepathic watermelon for an hour. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zam12Ae1-68

It's true that Rowling's attempts to retcon her books into progressivism by claiming things like "Dumbledore was gay" or "Hermione was black" or "lycanthropy is a metaphor for living with AIDS" was a not-great look before the 2017 elections. If more people only took notice of her now, it's because nobody gives a poo poo about whether Hermione really is black, but it sorta matters when she's using her position of influence to publicly hand-wring about the Labour party.

And after the discussion of Harry Potter, the author of Witch Girls Adventures has resurfaced with an announcement of a supplement specially for that (Larry Spotter And The Secret Supplement) Granted it’s probably just a bunch of obvious lists like most of the WGA supplements and still uses the same broken and transformation-obsessed system but there it is.

Dude, Dumbledore being gay was news... when she came out with it in 2007. A decade ago. The Lupin stuff is older than that. Hiptsers should maybe get their news from somewhere slightly more truthy (or at least capable of operating Google) instead of outrage manufacturing machines.

That was exactly my point. It already wasn't a good look back then (or was at least controversial), but since it only ever affected people who read about and cared about Harry Potter, it didn't really register to a wider audience.

Speaking of Harry Potter, the creator of Magical Academy Harvest has agreed to let me make that my 2nd project. It’s something like 10x longer than LOST (especially thanks to 2 full supplements already being done) so at that point I might try to round up another translator or two to help.

I wonder what's with the weird paucity of Harry-Potter-esque academy-based RPGs. Most other nerd genres have at least one popular take on them, why not the biggest, most influential fantasy series in recent history?

People who want to roleplay Harry Potter are already doing that freely in chat rooms and so on, as with a lot of other things. There is theoretically a big market for narrative, character-focused RPGs that has never been captured because those people are doing it online without any rules beyond a more defined social contract. There have been a lot of popular children's books and most of them didn't inspire RPGs. Games where you play kids are few and far between. The handful of decently-well-known indie games out there are no more or less than I'd expect.

Popular genre doesn't really convert to there should be an RPG for it. Like I can count the number of police procedural RPGs on the fingers of one hand, mostly because there's no way to mechanically represent "Oh hey, that's a semi-prolific character actor he must be the killer' Hell, except for things like TORG and the Strange which aren't quite the same thing, there's never really been a portal fantasy RPG, despite that being one of the bigger fantasy subgenres. (I think there was an ICE attempt to do a Narnia RPG based on the MERP system but I'm not sure it was ever released)
