The kid "starts talking like a drunk sailor" but what we see is "foreigner." Is there a particularly derogatory term for "foreigner" in Korean? We see the term come up a lot in MFAC of course and I'm kind of curious how Korean words for "foreigner" compare to like gweilo and gaijin.

The actual term used was "drunken old man" but I thought that sounded weird in English (no stereotype of old drunkards in this culture) so I went with the closest substitute, forgetting that "drunken sailor" contains implications of being a potty mouth. The word foreigner is not considered a slur, just kind of rude in second person speech. I use it in first person speech all the time.

I can't make any sense of this one.

The way characters in Dick Tracy are always using each other's names so that we'll know who they are is really starting to annoy me. Especially when I know that they're most likely going to be completely unimportant and disappear forever within a few months.

Is that who that one was supposed to be? I thought it could be, but it seemed so bad that I thought it must be some other character I wasn't familiar with who just looks similar.

Am I reading this wrong or is Lynn complaining that her kids aren't grateful enough for her doing the bare minimum of providing for them?

This is Lynn. She's also complained that the kids didn't consider boring back to school stuff "buying something for them" and that they wanted her around even if they didn't have a specific reason they could articulate.

She really doesn't like her kids much.

I believe it means he was briefly recruited by the Arizona Cardinals (as a player? a coach?)

But it doesn't really make sense. I call the St Louis Cardinals the cards, not the football team.

Yeah, "cup of coffee" usually refers to a very brief stint in whatever the relevant professional league is (as a player). It's not that uncommon to call the Arizona Cardinals "the Cards", either.

My favorite part of this strip is that it continues to deepen the inherent despair of Funky Winkerbean's world from "everyone is still in the same lovely Ohio town where they went to high school" to "they also tried really hard to escape but failed"!

The football team were the St. Louis Cardinals too, up until 1987.

Not sure what vintage of Cards the comic is supposed to be referencing, but the timing could work, I suppose.

It's a comic that relies a lot on The Meta. Any one strip is hit-or-miss, but the overall concept of a comic strip about a Bus and how that concept gets applied and warped and twisted and turned on its head in so many ways is what's so great about it. Imagine someone drawing the classic comic strip trope of "guy stranded on an island with one palm tree" every single day for a year, but the artist is so loving clever about subverting the trope and mixing it up on a daily basis that by the end of the year you are ten times more impressed at the artist for the feat than you are bored by seeing the same concept in a strip every day.
