Remember the story how Trump gave piles of money to the FL AG and she magically dropped all the state charges associated with Trump University lawsuits?

the Village Voice did a good writeup on Stephanie Miner, who's assumed to challenge Cuomo in the primary next year. all i knew about her was that she was once a Cuomo ally and had a falling out, and my assumption was because she had a personality to match. perhaps she's just riding the leftward winds to run a campaign, but i do like what she's saying

also term limits for governors are a good thing

Rensselaer County summons candidate for jury duty

quote:

TROY – Andrea Smyth, the Democratic candidate for Rensselaer County executive, opened a letter Thursday most people dread – a jury duty summons.

Smyth was called to appear on Monday Oct. 30 at the Rensselaer County Court House.

“The timing is incredible,” Smyth said.

Smyth’s summons for jury duty occurs at the start of the final week of campaigning before the Nov. 7 election.

Smyth of Rensselaer is running against Republican Assemblyman Steven McLaughlin of Troy for the $121,300 county executive’s post. They are seeking to be the successor to retiring County Executive Kathleen Jimino who is leaving office after 16 years. Green Party candidate Wayne Foy also is on the ballot.

Smyth said she would contact the commissioner of jurors office to see about postponing her appearance as the campaign season reaches its crescendo.

I mean, "I'm literally running for office right now" seems like a reasonable excuse to postpone it; it is very suspicious timing, though. Also I thought the jury selection process was confidential.

In the wake of former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's indictment on fraud and extortion charges in February 2015, his successor embarked on what seemed like a major reform.

Speaker Carl Heastie was praised for conducting a nationwide search for the leader of the newly created Assembly Office of Ethics and Compliance. In September 2015, Heastie announced that Jane Feldman, a respected former top ethics official in Colorado, would lead the office, whose stated mission was to "strengthen ethics and introduce greater transparency and accountability in the New York State Assembly."

But only a few months after taking the position, Feldman began to doubt that Heastie was serious about reform. Looking back, Feldman regards her hiring in large part as a public relations move by the legislative chamber's leadership.

She had expressed concern about her role to Assembly staff and others. "I would tell them it was a waste of money," Feldman said in an interview last week. "I didn't do anything."

Feldman left the Assembly in June and returned to Colorado, disillusioned with the glacial pace of progress in New York.

18, with State residency for 5 years, 12 months preceding elections in district you're running for.

well, here's hoping that Tahseen Chowdhury turns 18 before election day 2018. he's 16 now

meanwhile, Alcantara is getting challenged by Robert Jackson, who is being endorsed by the other person in the three-way primary last year in Micah Lasher. and a couple of days ago, Hamilton got a challenger in a young lawyer named Zellnor Myrie. hopefully at least one of them scores a win

tbh i think Stewart-Cousins should be held accountable to a degree, because it's clear she can't wrangle her party together in the senate. Cuomo and that big-money donor threw her a lifesaver with their idiotic comments

They will outspend the unions by 1000% to get some mandates removed from the constitution so their taxes can be lowered. I wasn't really sure, but after a panel discussion where even the person supporting (from the League of Women Voters) was talking about how much effort they would have to expend on just improving the process to get it anywhere near equitable by the time delegates are elected, I really hope it doesn't pass.

I went to a New Kings Democrats meeting that discussed the constitutional convention. They're all for it, and as someone who isn't, I decided to hear them out. I left halfway through mostly because the disgusting heat of the church we were in, but their argument more or less hinged upon one thing: the State Senate is the biggest obstacle to progress, so this is a better way of making lasting change. Not only is this a fatalistic argument, the vast majority of convention delegates will be elected by... State Senate districts. Three delegates per district with 15 at-large candidates. So they're relying on the hosed up State Senate to save New York from the State Senate. "Con Con" could not be a more appropriate shorthand for this charade.

For whatever reason, I think this is gonna pass.

When every single labor organization in the state is against something I don't understand how any serious leftist can be for it. NY DSA has a lot of support for the convention too, though the Labor Branch very strongly opposes. I get the frustration with the state senate, it's a mess for sure. But I don't understand how you can simultaneously believe it's possible to organize in the senate districts to get reformers to a convention but not to get them into the Senate.

A lot of NYS workers are not organized and are not likely to be organized anytime soon. On the other hand, some of the health, education, and free speech protections in the constitution are a really big deal and also ripe for "disruption" in this climate. The NYCLU rep who was arguing against it said it gave her shivers to think of what could happen to them under the right lobbying, if you don't have the standard process (two consecutive legislatures passing it followed by a ballot referendum) keeping it transparent.

the other part of the NKD argument that fell flat for me was how past conventions have reflected the political landscape. their examples of that working positively was in the late 1800s and the New Deal era. while trump is deeply unpopular outside of his own party and republicans are losing ground on issues like taxes (an issue which they've normally held an advantage over democrats), you can't deny that right-wing ideals have a firm grip on the political landscape today, and i'd bet a new constitution will reflect that

i'm baffled as to why NYC DSA and NKD, two firmly left-wing organizations, support this bit of con artistry while just about every other organization- left, right, and center- are vehemently against it. i don't think that NYC DSA has an official position on it, but when many of its members are for it, that doesn't look good for them. perhaps they're all nihilists

CAMBRIDGE — A school health teacher was suspended with pay and a second day of presentations by a staff member from the Pride Center of the Capital Region was canceled after parents of seventh-grade students raised concerns over a handout about transgender topics.

Oh, wow, was this some kind of transphobic filth?

quote:

Canini said parents were concerned with handouts from the class. One, meant for seventh-graders, listed “LGBTQ Terminology,” with words on one side and definitions on the other that were meant to be matched with the correct terms.

The terms included homophobia, intersex, polyamory/polyamorous, pansexual, bisexual, cisgender and gender non-conforming. Another handout, meant for the tenth-graders, was 42 pages long and went into detail on transgender issues.

Parent Sirell Fiel, who read from the handout on Facebook Live, said his seventh-grade son brought both packets home. The students in both grades got all the information, he said, and much of it he considered inappropriate, especially for the younger students.

“I have no problem with the school talking about diversity. Gay kids are out there, and the kids need to know about it. But the problem I have is that it went so in-depth. That’s too much for 11- and 12-year-olds,” Fiel said, noting he had called the school and heard back from the principal, who told him the issue was being investigated.
