Plex has thoroughly owned for me, and it's almost all I use my ATV for, other than live sports streaming in random other TV apps. Never had an issue with it. Remote server connections are most likely an upload rate issue with the server's internet connection, like if you're trying to watch your buddy's movies or whatever.

So if I've got a 2016 LG OLED do I manually set this to DolbyVision30Hz or do I just leave it on the default because only super spergs care about the difference between HDR10 and DV?

Naw he's got a fiber connection and I'm the only one with issues. Are there some wonky settings I might have hosed up somewhere on my end?

Can you even redeem a code via the AppleTV and avoid the disc thing all together?) It's pretty reliable. iTunes can be finicky. Like it's given me permission playback errors halfway through movies, making me restart. Also it wouldn't let me redeem one movie with 3 different codes. But the reseller gave me 3 different codes and finally credited me back the price. I usually hate Vudu, but the Apple TV app works pretty well and has been far more consistent than Apple's own movie player.

Just wanted to drop by and say thanks again for answering my questions! I love our new Apple TV, the interface is so much better and it has an app for Shudder, a streaming service we use a lot. My dad wound up getting one, too. Cheers y'all.

The gf and I are getting to the point where we’ve watched nearly every Netflix horror and need to branch out.

They could probably do 4K VP9 in software on the newest device.

This variable framerate on Apple TV sure sounds a lot like variable refresh rate/Adaptive Sync. I don’t recall this getting a mention in the initial presentation, but it seems to be what’s included in the new developer build, no? That’s a pretty big deal if true; basically running your movies and TV shows in 24/25 Hz and saving a bunch of power doing so. But this would only work on G-Sync/FreeSync monitors rather than TVs for the time being, right?

That was a single guy on Reddit who said "I'm an insider at Amazon. Trust me" and all the tech sites ran with it. It was never substantiated.

Yeah I went ahead and downloaded it. The option is there to allow apps to switch (you can pick rate, HDR, or both) but the apps themselves need to be updated to use it. Nothing else new I have seen.

You can download 4k from youtube using youtube-dl, open it in quicktime and airplay it to the appletv4k . However 4k60fps and HDR are only available in vp9 and apple only supports hevc for 4k60fps. code:

qirex posted:It's fun that format wars somehow managed to transcend physical media. It's been this way since the fight over the <video> tag. Apple consistently takes the position of standards consortiums and their patent licensing scheme, and Google (and the small numbers of people who use free Linux distros and want to see them legally do the things they want to do) making a free-to-license alternative. There's usually rational arguments for why Apple takes the tack they do, which comes down to "standards should be adhered to" and whether Google's solutions really are free of patent issues, but as someone who thinks computers should have the option of doing things people want to do whether or not someone pays for a software license I can understand where they're coming from. The VP* patent bullshit has been around and never credible since it launched. H.264 itself had patent infringement issues that were only resolved because the court ruled that the owner as a member of the consortium had to include it in the license pool.

I'm about to upgrade my internet and cut some cords, so I may finally replace my 3rd gen Apple TV. Does the 4K offer improved app performance over 4th gen? Don't care much if UHD is the only draw, though future-proofing it wouldn't be too bad I guess. VVVVV e: sweet, thanks! Minidust fucked around with this message at 16:53 on Nov 21, 2017 |

I mean, it's a two-generation newer processor, and the enhanced version of it at that, and actively cooled. It drat well better in theory. Though in practice, nothing I use is anything that really messes with the old one, and using both regularly, I don't really notice any difference. It'll be supported longer, though, which is probably important, since I'm not really sure what they can add in the future to make an upgrade worth it.
